Morning on the mesa starts with light hitting Red Mountain and Snow Canyon before it reaches the low part of town. Because the mesa sits higher, you see the color show from your patio while the streets below are still in shadow. If you ride, Cove Wash is about ten minutes down the hill. The Barrel Roll trail puts you on singletrack (a narrow trail wide enough for one bike) before the St. George commute even starts.

Midday stays practical. Harmons on Pioneer Parkway is three minutes down from the mesa, and the shops along that road handle your pharmacy, your hardware stop, and your coffee without touching St. George traffic. Santa Clara Drive is the slower way to go, and Frei's Fruit Market still sells fruit at the old stand when peaches are in season.

Evening is what the mesa is for. The western sky opens up past Snow Canyon, the breeze picks up across the mesa top, and the valley lights come on below you. From Arrowhead Mesa you look down over the town, and the town is still close enough to use. The sunset costs you nothing extra.

Arrowhead Mesa feels different from the subdivisions on the streets below. The lots run larger, and the setbacks (the space a home must leave from the lot line) feel wider. The height means most homes see a long horizon. Builders worked the plat (the recorded map of the lots) in phases through the 2000s. The homes lean contemporary, with stone accents, stucco, and the occasional modern farmhouse. What the homes share is space. Three-car garages are the norm, and a good number of plans have a garage bay tall enough for an RV. The lots leave room between you and the neighbor.

The mesa setting also means the breeze finds you. On a July evening, the air moves across the mesa top in a way the valley-floor streets do not get.

The mesa roads are wider and less traveled than the street grid below, which matters if you are backing a trailer or just like a quiet street. And like the rest of Santa Clara, power comes from the city's own utility, on one city bill with water, sewer, and trash.

The Santa Clara River Reserve is the mesa's backyard. About ten minutes down the hill, the Cove Wash trailhead opens into 6,500 acres of BLM land where the desert mesa meets the river bottom. Barrel Roll, Suicidal Tendencies, Sidewinder, and Precipice are the named mountain bike trails that put Santa Clara on the riding map. The trail network also serves hikers, trail runners, and the occasional horseback rider. The Tempi'po'op trail, on Land Hill, is about 3.5 miles long and leads to thousand-year-old Ancestral Puebloan petroglyphs. The trail is quiet and worth the walk, even if you are not a hiker.

The mesa sits up near Pioneer Parkway, so Snow Canyon State Park is close too, about eight minutes to the entrance in Ivins. The park has 38 miles of trails through petrified dunes and lava tubes. Gunlock Reservoir is roughly twenty minutes west when you want water instead of dirt.

Arrowhead Mesa is served by the Washington County School District. Santa Clara Elementary (2950 Crestview Dr, grades K-5) and Arrowhead Elementary (545 Arrowhead Trail, grades K-5) are both in town. Lava Ridge Intermediate (2425 Rachel Dr, grades 6-7) is minutes away. Snow Canyon Middle School (1215 N Lava Flow Dr, St. George) serves grades 8-9, and Snow Canyon High School (1385 N Lava Flow Dr, St. George) serves grades 10-12.
