Life on the hillside
Up against the reserve, town still close by
In shortThe Gap Trailhead into the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve sits inside the neighborhood itself.
Castle Rock sits on the northwest side of St. George, where the flat, open ground of the valley gives way to red cliffs. You reach it on North Castle Rock Road off Snow Canyon Parkway, about a mile and a half west of Bluff Street. The streets inside climb the hillside toward open land, and Gunsight Drive, Lone Rock Drive, Cascade Canyon Drive, Tower Butte Drive, and Artesia Drive are among them. The far edge runs into the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, so the neighborhood stops where protected desert begins.
It reads as one of the calmer corners of St. George. The homes are larger than the citywide average, and the lots are close to a quarter acre. There is no through traffic, because the roads climb up the hillside and stop. The price of that quiet is a few extra minutes to the busiest shopping. Snow Canyon Parkway now has its own grocery, though, and Bluff Street and the freeway are a short run down the hill.
One thing sets Castle Rock apart from its neighbors, and it sits right in the middle of it. The Gap Trailhead is one of the main entrances to the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve trail network, and it is right on Cascade Canyon Drive inside the subdivision. If a trailhead on your own street matters to you, that is the biggest draw here, and I would want to know that early.
Hillside highlights
The northwest hillside stands apart
Six things set this end of St. George apart. You have a trailhead inside the neighborhood and lots that back onto the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. A grocery arrived on Snow Canyon Parkway in 2023, and the Snow Canyon State Park entrance is up the road. The homes are larger and built in the 2000s, and the streets are quiet dead ends.
The Gap Trailhead inside the neighborhood
Curbside parking on Cascade Canyon Drive is the trailhead for the Gap trail, one of the main ways into the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. Few St. George neighborhoods put a trailhead on their own street.
Lots that back onto the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve
The upper edge of Castle Rock runs into the reserve, which is roughly 62,000 acres of protected desert. Protected land does not turn into more rooftops behind you.
Digby's Market on Snow Canyon Pkwy
The 40,000-square-foot Digby's Market opened at 1955 N Snow Canyon Parkway in 2023. That puts a full grocery about two minutes down the hill instead of across town.
Snow Canyon State Park up the road
The Snow Canyon State Park entrance is about ten minutes west on Snow Canyon Parkway. Sandstone domes, lava tubes, and dunes wait at the entrance.
Larger 2000s-built homes
Castle Rock was platted (mapped out into lots) in 2003 and 2004 and filled in through the 2000s with single-family homes. They run bigger than the St. George average, many above 3,000 square feet.
A quiet dead-end street plan
The streets climb up the hillside and stop without connecting through. So the only traffic on Gunsight or Lone Rock is people who live there or hikers headed for the trailhead.

The homes and the land
Homes & lots and Trails at the door
Homes & lots
Larger single-family homes on a quiet hillside
Castle Rock is a single-family subdivision, plain and simple, with no attached housing and no age restriction. It was platted in two phases, in 2003 and 2004, and it filled in through the 2000s. So the homes feel newer than the older west-side neighborhoods, but they are now settled and mature. Homes run larger than the St. George average, with a good share above 3,000 square feet. Some custom estate homes higher up the hillside go well beyond that.
Styles split between single-level ramblers and two-story plans, and most sit on roughly quarter-acre lots. The ground slopes toward town, so some lots lend themselves to daylight or walkout basements, which are basements with windows or a door to the yard. The homes on the upper streets and the reserve edge are priced on their view and where the lot sits as much as on square footage. There is also a run of build-your-own lots in the area. If you want to bring your own builder, you have options here that many finished St. George subdivisions do not offer.
Price is where you have to be careful. This is a higher-priced part of St. George than most. Recent sales have spanned a wide band, from smaller ramblers up to the top of the market for the biggest estate homes that back onto the reserve. A single average would mislead you with so few sales and so much variety. So I look at recent sales of similar homes, by size and where the lot sits, instead of trusting a neighborhood number. I would tell you to do the same before you judge value.
On this hillside the lot does half the pricing. A home backing the reserve and a home mid-street are priced like two different kinds of homes wearing the same subdivision name.
Trails at the door
A reserve trailhead on your own street
The Gap Trailhead is the one thing that is truly Castle Rock's and not its neighbors'. The trailhead is on-street parking on Cascade Canyon Drive, at the top of the hill inside the subdivision. It opens directly into the Paradise Canyon corner of the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. In most St. George neighborhoods you drive to a trailhead. Here you can walk out your door to one.
The Gap trail
The namesake route runs from the Cascade Canyon Drive trailhead into Paradise Canyon, threading between the ridges that give the trail its name. Reserve rules and dog restrictions are posted at the fenced entry.
Gecko and Paradise Rim
From the same trailhead, the Gap links to the Gecko and Paradise Rim trails. That is a favorite loop for runners and mountain bikers who want slickrock (smooth, bare sandstone) without leaving the west side.
Turtle Wall and Chuckwalla
The Paradise Canyon trails connect on into the wider reserve network toward Turtle Wall and Chuckwalla. So the trailhead you can walk to is a doorway to miles of desert, not a single loop.
Snow Canyon State Park, ~10 min
For a bigger day out, the Snow Canyon State Park entrance is about ten minutes west on Snow Canyon Parkway. The park has slot canyons, petrified dunes, and the paved Whiptail path.
Trail details come from the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve and Hike St. George. The wider outdoor picture, Snow Canyon and Gunlock included, is in the St. George guide.

Schools & education
Schools, by the facts
Castle Rock is served by the Washington County School District, in the Snow Canyon area. That is the group of schools that lead into Snow Canyon High. For the older grades, this part of town goes through Snow Canyon Middle School (grades 8-9) and Snow Canyon High School (grades 10-12). Grades 6-7 go to Lava Ridge Intermediate in Santa Clara.
The district's boundary map puts every Castle Rock lot in Diamond Valley Elementary (1411 W Diamond Valley Dr). Boundaries can change as the district grows. Check the current assignment for any home you are serious about directly with the district. Don't guess from a map. For outside school data, GreatSchools and Niche both publish numbers you can weigh yourself.
I cover the bigger education picture in the St. George guide.
What locals know
The details I would check twice
Before you get attached to any one address up here, look closely at the lot, how it sits against the reserve, the walk to the trailhead, and how prices spread. These are the four things I would walk a friend through first.
The lot does half the pricing
A home backing the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve and a home mid-street can share the Castle Rock name and still be priced very differently. Separate them before you judge a price.
The trailhead brings visitors
The Gap Trailhead parking is curbside on Cascade Canyon Drive. On a busy weekend, that upper stretch fills with hikers. That is wonderful if you are one of them. It is worth knowing if you want a still street.
Snow Canyon Parkway is your main road
Groceries at Digby's, the run to Bluff Street, and the drive to the Snow Canyon entrance all use this one road. Learn how it flows and the daily loop stays short.
Some parcels are still build-your-own
A run of lots in and around Castle Rock lets you bring your own builder. That is a different purchase from buying a finished home, so know which one you are looking at before you fall for it.

The buyer side and the seller side
Buying in Castle Rock
Castle Rock sits on the northwest side of St. George, up off Snow Canyon Parkway. You reach it on North Castle Rock Road about a mile and a half west of Bluff Street. The streets inside climb the hillside toward the red cliffs of the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. Gunsight Drive, Lone Rock Drive, Cascade Canyon Drive, Tower Butte Drive, and the rest are among them.
Single-family homes on roughly quarter-acre lots, most of them built in the 2000s after the subdivision was platted (mapped into lots) in 2003 and 2004. They run larger than the St. George average, with a good share of the homes above 3,000 square feet. You will find ramblers (single-level homes), two-story plans, and some custom estate homes higher up the hillside.
Yes, and it is the standout here. The Gap Trailhead sits inside the subdivision, with curbside parking on Cascade Canyon Drive at the top of the hill. From there the Gap, Gecko, and Paradise Rim trails run into the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, with links out to Turtle Wall and Chuckwalla. In most St. George neighborhoods you drive to a trailhead. Here you walk to one.
It is a higher-priced part of St. George than most because the homes are large and the lots back to protected land. Recent sales have spanned a wide band, from smaller ramblers to the top of the market for the biggest estate homes on the hillside. For a citywide yardstick, my 2025 market report puts the St. George median sale price at $589,990. Prices move, so check against the live listings.

Selling in Castle Rock
Values here depend on size, where the lot sits, and how close a home is to the reserve and the trailhead. They depend on those more than on a flat price per square foot. Start with the home valuation page. I will compare your home with recent Castle Rock sales, with no obligation.
When you list with me, your home is featured on MovingUtah where it fits best. It shows first on the St. George listings and on this Castle Rock page, where buyers are already looking. The get featured page explains how it works. If you are thinking about selling, I would be glad to talk it through with you.
It depends on what else is listed in this area right now. Few homes are for sale in Castle Rock at a time. A large home that backs onto the reserve or a short walk to the trailhead may have little else like it to compete with. Tell me your timeline and I will tell you plainly what I see, not a pitch.
Yes, and it is common here. Most of the work is getting the order and the timing right. I cover the steps in the buy and sell at once guide. I am licensed in both real estate and lending. On any one purchase I take one role. If I am your lender, I can tell you early if a home could be hard to get a loan on.
