A St. George community
Living in Desert Crest.
A young single-family pocket on Kastra Lane in the Desert Canyons corridor of far-south St. George, on the high-desert flats south of the Southern Parkway. Homes here went in mostly from 2017 on, the St. George Regional Airport is minutes away, and the whole side of town is one of the newest growth fronts in the county.
I am Scott Buehler, a Southern Utah resident of 20-plus years and a licensed REALTOR and lender. This is the honest version of what Desert Crest offers, what it costs, and what living on this far-south end of St. George actually feels like.

Life down south
The newest edge of St. George.
Desert Crest sits on and around Kastra Lane, on the far-south end of St. George in the broad Desert Canyons corridor that has grown up south of the Southern Parkway. You reach it off Desert Canyons Parkway near Rimrunner Drive, out where the city thins into high-desert flats and open sky rather than red-rock bench. It is a different feel from the older north-and-west neighborhoods: newer streets, younger trees, and a horizon that runs long toward the Arizona Strip.
The rhythm of daily life here bends around the Southern Parkway. That highway, SR-7, is the spine that ties this side of town to the St. George Regional Airport a few minutes north, to I-15, and east toward Sand Hollow and Zion. A Smith's grocery is built into the Desert Canyons commercial hub nearby, so the everyday run stays short, and the heavier shopping is a straight shot up River Road.
What you trade is proximity to the old core. Downtown St. George, the hospital on River Road, and the established shopping are all roughly fifteen minutes north. In exchange you get some of the newest housing stock in the county, quick airport access, and a quieter, more open corner of a fast-growing city.
Corridor highlights
Why this far-south corner is its own place.
A handful of specifics set the Desert Canyons corridor apart from the rest of St. George: the new airport minutes away, a grocery built into the development, a neighborhood elementary, singletrack out the back door, easy freeway access off the Southern Parkway, and some of the youngest homes in the county.
St. George Regional Airport, ~5 min
The commercial airport at 4550 S Airport Parkway sits just north of the corridor. Almost no other St. George neighborhood puts commercial flights this close to the driveway.
Grocery inside the corridor
A Smith's grocery anchors the Desert Canyons commercial hub, so the everyday run does not mean driving all the way back into the old part of town.
A neighborhood elementary
Desert Canyons Elementary, grades K-5, sits on Rimrunner Drive inside the corridor. For many of these streets the school run is short rather than a cross-town drive.
Singletrack out the back
The St. George Airport trail system ties into the Desert Canyons trail network on its south end, putting miles of desert mountain-bike singletrack within reach of the corridor.
Southern Parkway access, ~4 min
SR-7 runs along the corridor and hands you I-15, Sand Hollow, and the Zion side of the county without fighting surface-street traffic through the middle of town.
Some of the youngest homes around
Desert Crest homes went in mostly from 2017 on, so you are buying newer construction and newer systems rather than a mid-century remodel project.
Homes & lots
Newer single-story homes on desert lots.
Desert Crest is a phased single-family subdivision, and the recorded plats show it filling in over multiple phases. The homes I have looked at on Kastra Lane are newer construction, generally built from 2017 onward, which puts them among the younger housing stock in St. George. The prevailing style is the single-story rambler, stucco with a tile roof, on platted lots that run near a fifth of an acre.
Because it is a phased development rather than one single drop of houses, you will see both original-owner resales and newer builds sitting on the same streets. The lots are flat desert parcels, so most of these homes are on-grade single-level floor plans rather than the daylight-basement designs you find on the sloped benches farther north.
I would pull the current MLS before quoting a home count or a firm price band, because a young subdivision like this can turn over quickly and a single average hides a lot. For buyers, compare like homes, similar size, similar year, similar lot. For sellers, do the same before you choose your comps.
In a young subdivision, the right three comparables matter more than any neighborhood average.
Trails & outdoors
Desert singletrack and the open south.
The outdoor draw down here is dirt, not red-rock bench. The St. George Airport trail system runs just west of the airport and ties into the Desert Canyons trail network on its south end, which puts real desert mountain-bike singletrack close to the corridor. Here is the honest tiering, from close-in riding to a full day trip.
Airport / Desert Canyons singletrack
Roughly eight miles of dirt singletrack west of the airport, ranging from easy to expert, connecting to the Desert Canyons network on the south end. These trails are unmarked, so ride them with a GPS app.
Sand Hollow State Park, ~15 min
East on the Southern Parkway, Sand Hollow Reservoir opens up boating, the red-sand Sand Mountain OHV dunes, and warm-water swimming through the warm months.
Zion National Park, under an hour
The Southern Parkway feeds toward the Hurricane and La Verkin route to Zion's main gate, an easy day trip from this side of St. George.
Snow Canyon State Park, ~30 min
On the far northwest side of town, Snow Canyon adds slickrock, lava tubes, and sand dunes. It is a cross-town drive from here, but it is the classic St. George hike.
Trail details come from local St. George mountain-biking guides and the BLM. The wider outdoor picture, Zion and Snow Canyon included, is in the St. George guide.
Errands & drive times
Errands, measured in minutes.
This is the practical answer to "how far is everything from the far-south end of St. George." The short version: the close-in grocery and the freeway are only a few minutes out, and the older core of the city sits about fifteen minutes north. Times are measured from Kastra Lane in the Desert Canyons corridor; traffic and the exact home will move them a little.
| The errand | Where it happens | From the corridor |
|---|---|---|
| Quick grocery run | Smith's, Desert Canyons commercial hub | ~4 min |
| Freeway on-ramp | Southern Parkway (SR-7) near the airport | ~4 min |
| Flights | St. George Regional Airport, S Airport Parkway | ~5 min |
| Bigger grocery and shopping | River Road corridor stores | ~12 min |
| Healthcare | St. George Regional Hospital, Medical Center Dr | ~15 min |
| Dinner downtown | Historic downtown St. George | ~15 min |
| Campus and events | Utah Tech University | ~15 min |
| Lake day | Sand Hollow State Park | ~15 min |
Farther out, the Southern Parkway puts Zion National Park under an hour east, and Las Vegas is roughly two hours south on I-15. The full day-trip map lives in the St. George guide.
Schools & education
Schools, by the facts.
Desert Crest is part of the Washington County School District. The neighborhood school is Desert Canyons Elementary (grades K-5), on Rimrunner Drive inside the corridor. From there the area generally feeds Sunrise Ridge Intermediate (grades 6-7), Desert Hills Middle (grades 8-9), and Desert Hills High (grades 10-12).
The district adjusted elementary boundaries on this side of town, effective the 2026-2027 school year, so confirm the current assignment for any specific address directly with the district rather than guessing from a map. For independent school information, GreatSchools and Niche both publish data you can weigh for yourself. Utah Tech University is about fifteen minutes north in the center of town.
I cover the bigger education picture, including Utah Tech, in the St. George guide.
The airport-era south end
Built with the new airport, not before it.
Here is the thing that makes Desert Crest itself, and not just another St. George subdivision. This whole side of town is new by St. George standards. The St. George Regional Airport opened here in 2011, and the Desert Canyons corridor grew up around it afterward, which is why the homes on Kastra Lane read as a 2017-and-later pocket rather than an older, in-filled neighborhood. You are buying into a part of the city that mostly did not exist a generation ago.
That youth cuts both ways, and I would rather you weigh it on purpose. On the plus side, you get newer construction, newer systems, wide streets, and a location wired for the way the county is actually growing, south and east along the Southern Parkway. On the other side, the corridor is still filling in. Commercial services are arriving in stages, some parcels around you are still raw ground, and the far-south flats trade the red-rock bench views of older St. George for open high-desert sky.
None of that is a problem, but it is a character. The buyers who do well down here are the ones who want the newer-home, airport-adjacent, still-growing version of St. George, and who are clear-eyed that "new" means both fresh and unfinished at the same time.
What I check before I call a home down here a fit
- What is planned on the raw parcels around the home, since the corridor is still being built out.
- How the specific home sits relative to the airport and the Southern Parkway for noise and access.
- Which recorded phase the home is in, because that shapes both the comps and the neighbors still to come.
- The current school assignment with the district, given the recent boundary work on this side of town.

What locals know
Notes from the far-south corridor.
No listing photo tells you this part. After years of watching the south end of St. George grow, here is what I would tell a friend.
-
The Southern Parkway is the whole game. SR-7 is how you reach the airport, I-15, Sand Hollow, and the Zion side. Once you learn the corridor, this far-south location stops feeling far.
-
You trade red rock for open sky. The older north and west sides sit right against the cliffs. Out here the draw is a long, open high-desert horizon rather than a red-rock backdrop. Know which one you actually want.
-
Single-story is the norm here. On these flat lots most homes are on-grade single-level ramblers, not daylight-basement bench homes. That is a real plus if stairs are something you are trying to avoid.
-
This corner is still filling in. The Desert Canyons corridor is one of the county's active growth fronts, so raw parcels, new phases, and new neighbors are part of the deal. If you like being early in a place that is still taking shape, this end delivers that.

Buying in Desert Crest
Desert Crest sits in far-south St. George, on and around Kastra Lane in the Desert Canyons corridor south of the Southern Parkway (SR-7). It is one of the newer pockets on that side of town, a few minutes from the St. George Regional Airport and reached off Desert Canyons Parkway near Rimrunner Drive.
Single-family homes on platted subdivision lots, most of them built from 2017 onward. The homes I have looked at run to single-story ramblers around 2,000 square feet with stucco and tile roofs on lots near a fifth of an acre. Because it is a phased subdivision, you will see both resale homes and newer construction.
The closest full grocery is the Smith's built into the Desert Canyons commercial hub, a few minutes away. Beyond that, the River Road corridor to the north carries the bigger stores and is roughly 12 minutes up from the neighborhood. The Southern Parkway on-ramp near the airport is about 4 minutes out.
Desert Crest is in the Washington County School District. The neighborhood school is Desert Canyons Elementary (grades K-5) on Rimrunner Drive, and the area generally feeds Sunrise Ridge Intermediate (6-7), Desert Hills Middle (8-9), and Desert Hills High (10-12). The district adjusted boundaries on this side of town for 2026-2027, so confirm the current assignment for any specific address directly with the district.

Selling in Desert Crest
Values here move with what has closed recently inside the plat and how a home compares on size, single-story layout, and lot. Start with the home valuation page and I will run a real comparison against recent Desert Crest and Desert Canyons sales, no obligation.
List with me and your home is featured across MovingUtah, on this page, on the St. George hub, and in the featured listings buyers browse on this site. The get featured page walks through exactly how that works.
It depends on what is listed in the subdivision right now. When inventory is thin, a well-kept single-story home in a young Desert Canyons pocket draws attention because buyers are comparing across the same kind of home. Tell me your timeline and I will give you a straight read, not a pitch.
Yes, and it is common here. Timing the two is mostly a sequencing problem, and I cover the playbook in the buy and sell at once guide. Because I am dual-licensed, I can keep the sale, the search, and the financing on one desk.
