A St. George community
Living in Foremaster Ridge.
A narrow ridgeline of custom homes in east-central St. George, reached off Foremaster Drive near the hospital district. The ridge is visible from town on both sides, and the homes built along it look out over downtown, Pine Valley, and the distant cliffs toward Zion and the Red Cliffs.
I am Scott Buehler. I have spent 20+ years in Southern Utah, and this page is the honest version of what a small custom-home ridge offers, what it costs, and what I would check before you buy or sell up here.

Life on the ridge
A narrow ridge you can see from town.
Foremaster Ridge takes its name from the ridgeline it sits on, a narrow rise in east-central St. George that is visible from other parts of the city precisely because it stands above the valley floor. Homes are reached off Foremaster Drive, in the same corridor as the hospital district, rather than tucked behind a single production entrance.
Because it is a ridge and not a platted grid, the streets follow the terrain. Some lots sit right on the spine with a view corridor on both sides, others sit a step down with the outlook facing one direction. That difference matters more here than in a flat subdivision, and it is the first thing I walk a buyer through before they fall for a listing photo.
Evening is when the ridge does its best work. The valley lights come on below, the Red Cliffs catch the last color to the east, and the drive back up from errands ends with a view most St. George streets do not have.
Neighborhood highlights
What sets this ridge apart.
A ridge with views on both sides
The ridgeline is narrow enough that homes here look toward downtown and Pine Valley on one side and the Red Cliffs and the distant cliffs toward Zion on the other, depending on where a lot sits.
Close to the hospital district
Foremaster Drive sits in the same corridor as St. George's hospital and medical office campus, which puts healthcare, imaging, and specialist offices a short drive from the ridge.
Custom homes, mixed builders
Homes here were built by a mix of local and national builders rather than one developer repeating a plan book, so square footage, finish level, and style vary lot to lot in a way a production subdivision does not.
Established, not brand new
Most of the ridge was built in the mid-1990s, with a handful of homes filling in remaining lots as recently as the mid-2010s, so mature landscaping is the norm rather than the exception.
Pioneer Park nearby
Pioneer Park, at 375 East Red Hills Parkway, has hiking and trail access on the sandstone hills at the north edge of downtown, a short drive from the ridge.
A small community feel
Roughly 50 homes means low turnover and a comp pool that stays thin. When a home does list here, it tends to draw attention fast.
Homes on the ridge
Custom homes, not a production plan book.
Foremaster Ridge is a custom-home community. Rather than one builder running the same handful of floor plans, homes here were built individually by a mix of local and national builders across roughly two decades, most in the mid-1990s with some newer construction filling remaining lots as recently as the mid-2010s. That history shows up in the streetscape: single-story and two-story homes sit side by side, in Southern Utah desert, modern, and traditional styles.
Sizes generally run from about 2,000 to 4,800 square feet, and most homes carry three to five bedrooms. Because the ridge is narrow, lot position drives value here more than almost anything else. A home tucked a step below the spine and a home sitting right on the ridgeline can carry very different views even a few doors apart.
On a ridge this narrow, the lot is the product. The view is what you are actually buying.
I would pull the recorded plat and current MLS comps for the exact lot dimensions and build year on any specific home before you compare it to its neighbors, since a custom-home street like this one does not reduce cleanly to a single average.
Trails & outdoors
Recreation, a short drive from the ridge.
Foremaster Ridge does not have a trailhead at the door, but St. George's central trail network is close. Pioneer Park, on the sandstone hills at the north edge of downtown, is the nearest named trail system, with hiking on slickrock and views back over the city. Confirm the exact route and drive time from your specific street before you count on it as a daily walk.
Pioneer Park
375 East Red Hills Parkway. Sandstone hiking trails including the Pioneer Park Trailhead and connecting Pioneer Rim and Pioneer Hills routes, with two parking areas and views over downtown St. George.
The city trail network
St. George maintains an extensive paved trail system connecting neighborhoods, parks, and the Virgin River corridor. From the ridge, the nearest connections are a short drive rather than a walk.

Errands & drive times
Errands, measured from Foremaster Drive.
Times below are measured from Foremaster Drive, the street that carries the ridge's traffic down into the rest of St. George. From the upper streets on the ridge itself, add a couple of minutes.
| The errand | Where it happens | From Foremaster Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Grocery run | Harmons, 1189 E 700 S | ~5 min |
| Healthcare | St. George Regional Hospital, River Road campus | ~5 min |
| Freeway on-ramp | Interstate 15 at Exit 8 | ~5 min |
| Trail access | Pioneer Park, 375 East Red Hills Parkway | ~8 min |
| Dinner downtown | Historic downtown St. George, Ancestor Square | ~8 min |
Farther out, Zion National Park is about an hour east and Las Vegas is about two hours south on I-15. The full day-trip map lives in the St. George guide.
Schools & education
Schools, by the facts.
Foremaster Ridge is served by the Washington County School District, which covers all of St. George and the surrounding communities. The district assigns students to elementary (K-5), intermediate (6-7), middle (8-9), and high school (10-12) attendance zones based on the specific address, and boundaries can shift as the city grows. I would confirm the current elementary, intermediate, middle, and high school assignment for any home you are serious about directly with the district rather than guessing from the ridge's general location.
For independent school information, GreatSchools and Niche both publish data you can weigh for yourself.
I cover the bigger education picture, including Utah Tech University, in the St. George guide.
Living on the ridge
What a narrow ridge actually means.
Most St. George neighborhoods sit on the valley floor. Foremaster Ridge does not, and that single fact drives almost everything else about the community. Because the ridge is narrow enough to see from other parts of town, homes here can look toward downtown and Pine Valley on one side and the Red Cliffs and the cliffs toward Zion on the other, sometimes from the same lot.
That elevation cuts both ways. A ridge catches more wind than a sheltered valley street, and a lot facing west or southwest picks up strong afternoon sun in summer the same way any high, exposed lot in Southern Utah does. Because the community was built out gradually by different custom builders rather than one developer grading the whole site at once, slope, retaining, and drainage details vary lot to lot more than they would in a platted subdivision.
None of that makes the ridge a bad bet. It makes it a place where the specific lot matters more than the neighborhood name, which is exactly why I walk it in person before I put a number on any home up here.
What I check before I call a ridge lot a safe bet
- Which way the lot faces and what the view actually is, standing on the lot itself rather than trusting a listing photo.
- Retaining walls, grading, and drainage on a slope lot, since build quality and age vary by builder on a custom street.
- Recorded lot dimensions and any hillside or ridgeline setback conditions against the county plat.
- Current utility status and any recorded easements directly with the county and city, since the community was built out over roughly two decades.
This is general guidance, not an engineering or hazard determination. Confirm any specific property with the city and a qualified inspector before you rely on it. Sources: county real estate listing data and St. George city planning references for the area.
What locals know
Notes from the ridge.
No listing photo tells you this part. After more than 20 years in Southern Utah, here is what I would tell a friend.
-
The view is the amenity. On a ridge this narrow, the view is what you are buying. Standing on the actual lot beats any listing photo, especially with the sun at a different angle than the one in the photos.
-
No two homes are alike. Because different builders worked the ridge over roughly two decades, square footage, finish level, and style swing wider than on a typical production street. Comps take more work here.
-
Inventory runs thin. In a community of roughly 50 homes, maybe one or two list in a given year. When a home does come on the market, it draws attention fast.
-
Foremaster Drive is the corridor to know. It is the street that carries the ridge down to the hospital district and the rest of St. George, so most errand and commute patterns start there.

Pricing depends heavily on view exposure, lot position, and square footage, since every home is a custom build. List with me and your home is featured across MovingUtah, on this page, on the St. George hub, and in the featured listings buyers browse on this site. The get featured page walks through exactly how that works.
It depends on what is listed on the ridge right now. A home with a clean view corridor or a larger custom lot draws attention when inventory in a community this size runs thin. Tell me your timeline and I will give you a straight read, not a pitch.
Yes, and it is common here. Timing the two is mostly a sequencing problem, and I cover the playbook in the buy and sell at once guide. Because I am dual-licensed, I can keep the sale, the search, and the financing on one desk.
