The short answer
North Logan is the bench neighbor immediately north of Logan, a separate city (first incorporated as a town in 1934) that shares a border and a valley but keeps its own government and its own character. Its streets run east and uphill from US-91, past a Walmart and the large format stores on North Main, up through the newer subdivisions to where Green Canyon opens into the Bear River Range. Two things pull outsiders here: Green Canyon for the trails, and the Pumpkin Walk at Elk Ridge Park every October. The shape of it

North Logan reads west to east and low to high, and it wraps the north edge of the Utah State area without quite touching campus. The low, western side runs along US-91, which locals call Main Street, the spine that carries the Walmart Supercenter, the big box retail and the traffic up from Logan. From there the ground tilts east and climbs. The subdivisions step up the bench block by block until the pavement gives out at the mouth of Green Canyon, where the Bear River Range begins. That rise from highway to canyon in a couple of miles is the whole shape of the town.
Bench or floor is the distinction that ends up mattering most here, as it does all over the valley. The higher streets on the east side sit above the worst of the winter haze when cold air pools on the valley floor, and they catch the long view back across the basin toward the Wellsville Mountains. The lower west side sits closer to the highway, the stores and the older platted blocks. Yes. Cache Valley Hospital, a MountainStar facility with a 24 hour emergency room, sits at 2380 North 400 East in North Logan. The valley's larger hospital, Logan Regional, is about ten minutes south in Logan.
Everyday shopping is close. A Walmart Supercenter and a strip of large format retail run along North Main (US-91). For the historic downtown, the university and the county offices, Logan is about ten minutes south.
It is North Logan's signature fall event, held at Elk Ridge Park over several evenings around Halloween since 1983. Volunteers build elaborate scenes out of carved and decorated pumpkins, and admission is free, though the crowds are large and parking is tight. Confirm the current year's dates before you go, as they shift with the calendar.
Green Canyon is the mouth of a canyon in the Bear River Range at the eastern edge of North Logan, reached from the top of the bench. A dirt road and trail run up it, and it is a close in spot for hiking, mountain biking, trail running and, in winter, snowshoeing. It is the everyday outdoor backyard for the north end of the valley.
Cache Valley traps cold air in winter, and an inversion can pool haze on the valley floor for days at a time. Because North Logan climbs the east bench, its higher streets often sit above the worst of that lid while the floor stays socked in. How much you notice it depends a great deal on your elevation within the city.
