The whole east bench sits on an active geothermal field, where two natural hot springs a mile apart pour out water near 168 degrees and pile up orange rock. Add a green irrigated valley people call the Little Green Valley and a plateau wall climbing to about 11,225 feet directly overhead, and you have a place that is genuinely unlike its neighbors.

The short answer

What makes Monroe different is that it is a geothermal town, not just a town with a hot spring. Its east bench sits over the Monroe-Red Hill geothermal system, two producing hot springs about a mile apart, both building orange travertine rock. Wrap that in a green farm valley under an 11,225 foot peak and no other Central Utah town can copy the mix. A whole geothermal field, not one hot spring

The thing to understand first is that Monroe does not have a hot spring; it has a geothermal field. Hot water rises along the east bench through the Monroe-Red Hill geothermal system and surfaces at two separate producing springs about a mile apart. Mystic Hot Springs is the one on the east side, and Red Hill Hot Springs sits a mile to the north. Both come out of the ground near 168 degrees, and both carry no sulfur, so there is none of the rotten egg smell people expect from hot water.

What the mineral water leaves behind is as distinctive as the heat. As it cools it drops dissolved calcium carbonate and builds travertine, the same orange terraced rock you see at famous hot springs around the world. Over thousands of years it has laid down the Monroe Mound, a travertine deposit that runs roughly a mile across and about 200 yards wide on the edge of town. Those orange mounds are the visible proof that the whole bench, not just one pool, is alive with hot water.

The developed soaking side of the story, the vintage iron tubs slowly cementing into the mound and the converted buses you can sleep in, belongs to Mystic itself and lives on the Mystic Hot Springs page. What matters for the town's identity is the scale of it: a farm community of a couple thousand people sitting on top of a live geothermal system.

The Little Green Valley under the plateau

Monroe and the country around it are nicknamed the Little Green Valley, and the name is literal. The town sits at about 5,394 feet on the floor of a narrow valley that creeks off the mountains keep irrigated all summer. From the highway the pattern is unmistakable: a ribbon of green fields and pasture on the bottomland, and dry brown foothills climbing away on both sides. The water is the whole reason the valley stays green while the hills do not.

Overhead is the second half of the setting. The Sevier Plateau rises on the east in a long wall, and its high point, Monroe Peak, reaches about 11,225 feet, the top of the plateau, standing close to 6,000 feet above the valley floor. That is a lot of relief to have in your kitchen window, and it is the reason the mountain feels present from every street in town.

The three pieces together, hot water under the bench, green fields on the floor, and a near 11,225 foot wall overhead, are what set Monroe apart from the other farm towns strung along US-89. The mountain that is growing its aspen back

The mountain over town carries a story most residents cannot summarize, and it is a good one. Over the past two centuries, Monroe Mountain lost more than 70 percent of its aspen, as a long era of putting out every fire let conifers crowd the aspen groves out. Aspen depends on disturbance to regenerate; without periodic fire, the darker evergreens take over and the white trunked stands fade.

What is happening now is a deliberate reversal on a large scale. Across roughly 55,000 acres of the Fishlake National Forest above Monroe, the U.S. Forest Service, Utah's Division of Wildlife Resources and Watershed Restoration Initiative, and a working group of more than twenty landowners and agencies are using prescribed fire and mechanical thinning to bring the aspen back. It is a long, well funded effort that runs across many seasons and many partners, and it is watched as a model other Western forests are meant to copy.

The mountain's fire history is not only old. In 2025 the Monroe Canyon Fire burned a large stretch of the range, and post-fire runoff has closed the canyon road and the picnic area at times since. Check current mountain and canyon access before you head up. The 2025 Monroe Canyon Fire burned much of Monroe Mountain, and post-fire flooding has closed Monroe Canyon Road and Monrovian Park at times since. From South Bend to Alma to Monroe

The town's name changed twice before it stuck. Settlers moved onto the valley floor in February 1864 and first called the place South Bend, then Alma, after a figure in Latter-day Saint scripture. In 1872 the residents applied for a post office under the name Monroe, in honor of U.S. President James Monroe, and that is the name that held.

The rest of the civic timeline is short and typical of the valley. Monroe was incorporated as a town in 1889 and became a city in 1921. The early Alma name still turns up around town, most visibly at the Camp Alma Relic Hall on Main Street, the local pioneer museum, which keeps the settlement story on display.

None of that history is what a newcomer notices first, of course. The hot water and the green valley are. But it is worth knowing that the farm town under the geothermal bench has been here, under three different names, for more than 160 years.
