The short answer
Smithfield is a pioneer town at the north end of Cache Valley, settled in 1859 and laid out on a square grid along Summit Creek at the foot of its own canyon. US-91 runs north and south through the middle of it as Main Street, past an old brick core near the center and newer subdivisions spreading toward the east bench and across the highway toward the fields. Two things give the town its identity: Health Days, the May festival that has run since 1925 and earned Smithfield the Utah's Health City nickname, and Smithfield Canyon, the national forest drainage at the east edge of town. The shape of it

Smithfield reads on a grid, the way the pioneer towns of the valley do. When the settlers laid it out in 1860 they platted square blocks divided into four one-acre lots, and that old pattern of deep yards and wide streets still shapes the core near the center. US-91 runs straight through the middle as Main Street, carrying the traffic north and south and lining up the old brick and frame storefronts. Summit Creek comes down out of the canyon and threads through town, the same water the first families settled for.
The town sits low and its canyon sits east. Most of Smithfield is on the valley floor, near 4,600 feet, and the newer subdivisions climb the east bench toward the mouth of Smithfield Canyon or spread west across the highway toward the fields. Bench or floor is the distinction that ends up mattering here, as it does all over the valley: the higher streets catch the long view back toward the Wellsville Mountains and sit higher, while the flat low ground holds the cold. Smithfield is in Cache County, at the north end of Cache Valley, about seven miles north of Logan along US-91. The drive south into Logan runs about 12 minutes on the highway, which doubles as Main Street through town. There is no interstate and no passenger train in the valley, so US-91 is the through road.
About 15,150 people live in Smithfield (Census 2025 estimate, up from 13,571 at the 2020 count), which makes it the second-largest city in Cache County. It has grown as newer subdivisions filled in toward the east bench and out across US-91 toward the fields, while the founding-era grid near Main Street stayed much as it was.
Smithfield schools belong to the Cache County School District, with Sky View High in town since 1963 and elementary and middle schools across the neighborhoods. Look up ratings and test scores at a third party like GreatSchools or Niche, and verify the current attendance boundary for any address with the district.
Health Days is Smithfield's signature event, a week of activities held each May since 1925, which is why the town calls itself Utah's Health City. The week opens with a Fun Run from Mack Park, then the parade on Main Street and a park day with horse pulls and fireworks at Forrester Acres. Confirm the current year's schedule before you plan around it, since the dates shift within May.
Smithfield Canyon is the town's own national forest drainage, opening into the Bear River Range at the east edge of town where Summit Creek comes down. A small Forest Service campground sits up the canyon, and a trail climbs from it toward the Mount Naomi Wilderness. It is the close in backyard for hiking, picnicking and getting up out of the valley in summer.
For groceries, Lee's Marketplace on South Main is the anchor in town. The big stores in North Logan are about 10 minutes south down US-91, Cache Valley Hospital about 9, and Utah State University about 15. Smithfield keeps a working Main Street of its own, but the larger errands run toward Logan.
Settlers arrived in the fall of 1859 and first called the place Summit, after Summit Creek. When the town was laid out in 1860 it was renamed for John G. Smith, an early town leader. The pioneer grid of square blocks, each divided into four one-acre lots, still shapes the old core of town near Main Street.
Smithfield sits on the floor of northern Cache Valley, near 4,600 feet, so winters are snowy and cold air settles in. Like the rest of the valley it can hold a December inversion, when haze pools under a lid of cold air for days at a time. Streets that climb the east bench sit a little higher, but this is a valley-floor town at heart.
