Gunnison sits on the flat floor of the San Pitch River valley, at the low southern end of Sanpete County. The Wasatch Plateau walls the valley on the east and the San Pitch Mountains and the Gunnison Plateau close it on the west, and US-89 runs straight down the middle, doubling as the town's Main Street. The town proper is small, but the wider Gunnison Valley, which folds in Centerfield, Fayette and Mayfield, is the real trade area, and it is old irrigated farm ground: turkeys and sugar beets a century ago, small grains, alfalfa and cattle today.
Two things explain how a town this size supports a hospital and a full set of services. One is that farm economy, which put Gunnison at the founding of Utah's turkey cooperative. The other is the Central Utah Correctional Facility on the east edge of town, the area's largest single employer, which draws workers from across the six-county region.
