Nephi, the small town with two big stories

Two things a stranger would never guess from the freeway. Nephi is the hometown that The Killers built their 2021 album Pressure Machine around, after Brandon Flowers grew up here, and it is where Utah's first recorded baseball game was played on New Year's Day in 1875. Beyond that it is where the Juab County offices sit, an I-15 town at the mouth of Salt Creek Canyon below Mount Nebo, and the host of the Ute Stampede rodeo every July.

The Census estimate for 2025 is about 7,490 people, up from 6,443 at the 2020 census. That makes Nephi the largest town in Juab County and the home of the county offices. It sits just above 5,000 feet on the east edge of the valley, right where Interstate 15 meets the mouth of Salt Creek Canyon, so the town runs up against the base of Mount Nebo on one side and open farm ground on the other.

Nephi is in central Utah on Interstate 15, in Juab County. Provo and the south end of Utah Valley are roughly 43 miles and 45 minutes north, Payson only about 27 miles, and Salt Lake City about 84 miles, close to an hour and a half up the same freeway. That straight interstate shot is the main reason a Utah Valley worker will weigh a Nephi address.

Yes. Pressure Machine, released in 2021, is a concept album by The Killers rooted in Nephi, the small Utah town where frontman Brandon Flowers spent part of his childhood. The record is framed with recorded voices of Nephi residents between the songs. It is the single most surprising fact about the town, and the identity guide on this companion tells the story of the album and the hometown tie.

By the best local account, yes. On New Year's Day in 1875, two Nephi nines played what is recorded as the first baseball game in Utah, on the town square that is now Pioneer Park. The team captains were Sam Gilson, later the namesake of the mineral gilsonite, and George C. Whitmore, who founded the town bank and built the Main Street mansion that still stands. The winning side took a quarter of beef per man.

The signature drive is the Nebo Loop up toward Mount Nebo, and the big event is the Ute Stampede rodeo each July. In town there is Pioneer Park and the baseball story, the historic Main Street and the Whitmore Mansion, and Yuba State Park is a short drive south for a day on the water. The Ute Stampede is Nephi's rodeo and summer celebration, run since 1935 and now one of Utah's larger annual events. It is a PRCA-sanctioned rodeo held each July, with a carnival, a car show, a 5K and two parades down Main Street, including the one Nephi calls the Mammoth Parade.

Very. Mount Nebo rises 11,928 feet as the highest peak in the Wasatch Range, right above town, and Nephi is the south end of the Nebo Loop National Scenic Byway that climbs toward it. The canyon at the town's edge, Salt Creek, gave Nephi its original settlement name. The route is a summer and fall drive and closes with the snow.
