Nephi sits on the east edge of the Juab Valley, where Interstate 15 runs past the point Salt Creek Canyon opens out of the Wasatch. The original settlers called the place Salt Creek for that canyon; the town took the name Nephi later. Behind it rises Mount Nebo, 11,928 feet and the highest peak in the whole Wasatch Range, so the view east from Main Street is a wall of mountain and the view west is open valley and farm ground. As the seat of Juab County it holds the courthouse and the county services, and its position on the freeway an hour below Provo is the reason a Wasatch Front worker will look this far south for a house.
The town runs on farming, freeway traffic and a long streak of industry. Plaster-making took hold here in the 1880s, and the Nephi Plaster and Manufacturing Company, incorporated in 1889, grew into one of the first plaster plants in the West and, for a time, the town's biggest employer. That industrial thread, the county-seat role and the ag base are the everyday economy behind the two stories the town is better known for now. The 2020 census counted 6,443 people, which makes Nephi the largest town and the county seat of Juab County. It sits just above 5,000 feet on the east edge of the valley, right where Interstate 15 meets the mouth of Salt Creek Canyon, so the town runs up against the base of Mount Nebo on one side and open farm ground on the other.
Nephi is in central Utah on Interstate 15, about an hour south of Provo. Provo and the south end of Utah Valley are roughly 41 miles and forty minutes north, Payson only about 28 miles, and Salt Lake City about 84 miles, close to an hour and a half up the same freeway. That straight interstate shot is the main reason a Utah Valley worker will weigh a Nephi address.
Yes. Pressure Machine, released in 2021, is a concept album by The Killers rooted in Nephi, the small Utah town where frontman Brandon Flowers spent part of his childhood. The record is framed with recorded voices of Nephi residents between the songs. It is the single most surprising fact about the town, and the identity guide on this companion tells the story of the album and the hometown tie.
By the best local account, yes. On New Year's Day in 1875, two Nephi nines played what is recorded as the first baseball game in Utah, on the town square that is now Pioneer Park. The team captains were Sam Gilson, later the namesake of the mineral gilsonite, and George C. Whitmore, who founded the town bank and built the Main Street mansion that still stands. The winning side took a quarter of beef per man.
The signature drive is the Nebo Loop up toward Mount Nebo, and the big event is the Ute Stampede rodeo each July. In town there is Pioneer Park and the baseball story, the historic Main Street and the Whitmore Mansion, and Yuba State Park is a short drive south for a day on the water.
