The county's inland sea, measured in feet and honesty

The Great Salt Lake, and why the valley watches it.

The lake that named the city is the biggest environmental story in Utah, and it is measurable: the south arm stands at 4,190.9 feet as of early August 2026, a few feet off its record low, and this spring the sailboats came out of the county's marina earlier than any year since 2020. Here is the lake in plain terms: the number that tells its condition, the dust the exposed lakebed sends into the wind, and the ten million birds that depend on what most maps still label a dead sea.

The number


One elevation figure, carrying the whole story.

The Great Salt Lake is measured in feet above sea level, and one number tells you its condition the way a temperature tells you a fever. As of early August 2026 the south arm stands at 4,190.9 feet, its lowest reading in more than three years. The all time recorded low, 4,188.5 feet, was set in November 2022. The range the state's own management matrix calls healthy runs roughly 4,198 to 4,205 feet. The wet winters of 2023 and 2024 bought the lake several feet back from the brink; the dry years since have been spending that gain.

Why a terminal lake swings like this is worth one plain paragraph. Nothing flows out of the Great Salt Lake; water leaves only by evaporation, so the level is simply the running balance of river inflow against evaporation, and every gallon diverted upstream for farms, lawns and taps is a gallon the lake never receives. Drought sharpens the arithmetic but the diversion side is the part humans control, which is why the lake has become the state's defining water policy subject.

The lake is vast and shallow, a puddle the size of a small state, so each vertical foot moves the shoreline enormous horizontal distances and exposes or covers whole townships of lakebed. That geometry is behind everything else on this page.

Crane Day


The morning the sailboats came out of the water.

On 30 May 2026 a crane worked the marina on the lake's south shore, lifting 24 sailboats out of their slips and onto stands in dry storage. The sailing community calls it Crane Day, and it happens when falling water makes the marina too shallow for deep keeled boats to float safely. What made this one news was the date: boats have not had to come out this early in the season since 2020. Owners described the mood accurately as no fun; a sailing season measured in weeks had just ended in May.

The marina sits at Great Salt Lake State Park on the county's own shoreline in Magna, which makes this the rare Great Salt Lake story that is physically a Salt Lake County story; most of the lake spreads north into other counties. The park, the launch and what a visitor actually finds at the end of that road are Magna's subject, told from Magna's doorstep, and this companion will hand that story to Magna's own pages when they are built. What belongs here is what Crane Day measures: the county's only harbor now runs at the mercy of the lake's arithmetic, season by season.

Shallow draft craft, kayaks and paddleboards continue on the lake when conditions allow, and at least one excursion operator has kept running through the low water by adapting where and how it launches. The lake is diminished, not closed.

The dust


What the exposed lakebed puts into the wind.

As the water retreats it uncovers lakebed, hundreds of square miles of it at current levels, and dried lakebed is not inert. The sediments carry arsenic and other metals accumulated over centuries, and when spring and summer wind events rake the exposed flats, they lift plumes of fine dust that can carry into the metro. This is the lake's air quality story, and it is a different one from the valley's famous winter haze: inversion is trapped cold air in the cold months, while lakebed dust is wind borne and belongs to the warm, dry season. The honest state of knowledge deserves honest wording. Researchers at Utah universities and state agencies are actively measuring what is in the dust, how often it reaches populated areas and what exposure means for health, and monitoring has expanded in recent years. What is established is that the sediments contain the metals, that dust events are real and observable, and that the risk grows as more lakebed is exposed. What remains under study is the precise health accounting. The life on it


A dead lake that feeds ten million birds.

The nickname America's Dead Sea has always been wrong. The lake's water is too salty for fish, but it carries an enormous simple food web: algae and microbialites, the reef like microbial structures on the lake floor, feed brine shrimp and brine flies in almost unimaginable numbers, and those feed birds. Roughly ten million migratory birds a year stage on the lake and its wetland fringe, one of the hemisphere's great shorebird and waterfowl gatherings, and the brine shrimp cyst harvest supplies aquaculture worldwide. Salinity itself is managed geography: the Union Pacific causeway splits the lake, leaving a saturated, often pink north arm and the fresher south arm the rivers feed.

Falling water threatens exactly this machinery: as salinity climbs past what shrimp and flies tolerate and microbialites dry above the waterline, the food web that carries the birds thins. That, alongside the dust, is why the lake's level stopped being an abstraction in Utah's politics and became a live, funded project.

From this county, seeing the lake means the south shore: the state park shoreline at Magna, and the Great Saltair, the Moorish revival concert venue whose predecessors have burned and flooded on that beach since 1893, with sunset over the water still the west valley's best free show. The lake, answered.

As of early August 2026 the south arm sits at 4,190.9 feet above sea level, its lowest point in more than three years and about two and a half feet above the all time recorded low of 4,188.5 feet set in November 2022. The state's management matrix treats roughly 4,198 to 4,205 feet as the healthy range, so the lake remains far below where its managers want it despite the recovery the wet winters of 2023 and 2024 bought.

Because it is a terminal lake: water leaves only by evaporation, so its level is the balance of river inflow against evaporation, and decades of upstream diversion for agriculture, lawns and taps have cut the inflow side while drought years cut it further. Wet winters can buy the lake feet at a time, as 2023 demonstrated, but the structural driver is how much of its rivers' water gets used before reaching it, which is why the policy debate centres on water use rather than weather.

The day a crane lifts the deep keeled sailboats out of the marina at Great Salt Lake State Park because falling water makes their slips too shallow. On 30 May 2026 the crane took 24 boats out, the earliest seasonal removal since 2020, ending the sailing season in May. It has become the lake community's bluntest annual measurement: when Crane Day comes early, the year's water story is already written.

The established facts: the exposed lakebed's sediments contain arsenic and other metals, wind events lift real dust plumes off the flats in the warm dry season, and more exposed lakebed means more source area. What exposure levels mean for health is under active study by Utah researchers and state monitors, and the honest answer today is documented concern rather than settled dosage. It is a separate phenomenon from the valley's winter inversion haze, which is trapped cold air, not lakebed dust.

In a diminished way. Deep keeled sailboats came out of the state park marina in May 2026 for lack of depth, so conventional sailing seasons now depend entirely on the lake's level year to year. Shallow draft craft, kayaks and paddleboards still go out when conditions allow, and excursion operators have adapted their launches to keep running. Anyone planning time on the water should check current marina and lake conditions with Utah State Parks first.

The famous effortless float is real, a product of salinity several times the ocean's, and generations bobbed off the Saltair beaches to prove it. At today's levels the practical experience involves long walks across exposed flats to reach water deep enough, and conditions vary season to season. The south arm is the swimmable arm; the causeway isolated north arm runs near saturation, which is what turns its water pink in satellite photos.

Episodically, and for biological reasons: decaying algae and lake organics on the mudflats, concentrated by wind direction and warm weather, produce the sulfurous note locals call the lake stink. It is occasional rather than constant, it rarely reaches far into the metro, and it is the trade off attached to a lake alive enough to feed ten million birds. A genuinely dead lake would smell like nothing, and would be a far worse neighbour.

No fish, but an enormous food web all the same: algae and reef like microbialite structures support brine shrimp and brine flies in the billions, which in turn feed roughly ten million migratory shorebirds and waterfowl a year across the lake and its wetlands, one of the great bird gatherings in the hemisphere. The brine shrimp harvest, collected as cysts each autumn, supplies fish and shrimp farms worldwide, a strange and genuine Utah export.

The south shore is the county's own window: the Great Salt Lake State Park shoreline and marina at Magna, with the Great Saltair concert venue on the same beach carrying a name that has burned and flooded there since 1893. Sunset over the water from that shore is the west valley's best free spectacle. Antelope Island, the bison herd and the classic beaches sit in Davis County to the north, a separate trip through a separate gate.

The lake is the valley's biggest open question.

No honest guide to this county skips it: the lake's arc will shape west side air, bird springs and water politics for decades, and anyone moving here deserves that stated plainly rather than brochured away.
