Groceries and daily shopping
Smith's Marketplace on North Main Macey's Walmart Supercenter
The thing that changed everyday Tooele most recently is grocery depth. On December 6, 2025, a Smith's Marketplace opened at 2483 N Main, a 123,000 square foot store with a drive-through pharmacy, a floral department, a butcher and cheese counter, and online pickup. It was the 58th Smith's in Utah, and it turned Tooele into a three-anchor grocery town overnight.
The other two anchors were already here. Macey's sits at 972 N Main, and a Walmart Supercenter is a few blocks off Main at 99 W 1280 N. All three fall within the same North Main retail corridor, so a resident is rarely more than a few minutes from a full-size store, and the pharmacies and everyday shopping that cluster around them come with it.
What Tooele does not have is the mall-and-warehouse density of the Salt Lake Valley. That wider selection is a relocation-planning question, and it lives on the moving guide; for the everyday cart, three full grocery stores in one town is more than most places this size carry.
The details
Good to know
The three anchors all sit along North Main, so grocery runs stay short. Adjacent communities add more: Soelberg's Market serves Stansbury Park and Grantsville, a few minutes out of the city, but those are separate towns rather than Tooele addresses.
The everyday picture
- Three full grocery anchors in town: Smith's Marketplace, Macey's, and a Walmart Supercenter.
- Smith's Marketplace, at 2483 N Main, opened in December 2025 and added a full marketplace store with a pharmacy.
- All three sit along the North Main corridor, so a weekly grocery run stays short.
- The widest mall-and-warehouse selection is still a drive over the hill.
The hospital and clinics
Mountain West Medical Center Independent, 44 beds 2055 N Main
Tooele keeps its own hospital, which is a large part of why it functions as a self-contained town. Mountain West Medical Center sits at 2055 N Main. It is an independent 44-bed community hospital with a 24-hour emergency room, and it is affiliated with University of Utah Health. The everyday services a town this size relies on are here: maternity and labor and delivery, general surgery, imaging, cardiology, and orthopedics.
A useful thing to get right is who runs it. Mountain West is not an Intermountain hospital and not an HCA hospital; it is independent, operated day to day by Quorum Health, with the University of Utah Health affiliation layered on top. For the most specialized care, the large tertiary hospital campuses are over the hill in the Salt Lake Valley, but the routine visits, the emergencies, and the deliveries are handled in town.
Around the hospital, both of Utah's big health systems run outpatient clinics right in Tooele. Intermountain operates an InstaCare urgent care at 777 N Main, and University of Utah Health keeps a clinic at 196 E 2000 N tied to Mountain West. Add the dentists and pharmacies in the core and most families rarely leave the valley for ordinary care.
The details
Good to know
This is an independent hospital, not an Intermountain or HCA one, so do not assume an insurance network by the name alone. Both big systems do run clinics in town, and the large hospital campuses are about thirty-five minutes east in the Salt Lake Valley. Clinic hours change, so confirm the current schedule before a visit.

- It is affiliated with University of Utah Health, and is not an Intermountain or HCA hospital.
- Both big health systems run clinics in town: Intermountain InstaCare on North Main and a University of Utah Health clinic on 2000 North.

Schools and campuses
Tooele County School District USU Tooele and Tooele Tech Ratings via third parties
Public schools in Tooele are run by the Tooele County School District, a single district that covers the entire county rather than just the city. Countywide it runs roughly 27 schools and about 16,000 students, and Tooele High is the city's comprehensive high school, with around 1,900 students. Those are the facts; for how any given school performs, the honest move is to read the third-party ratings rather than take a page's word for it.
Higher education has a real presence too. USU Tooele is a regional campus of Utah State University offering associate, bachelor's, and graduate work, and it opened a science and technology building with lab space. Next door, Tooele Technical College runs certificate programs, and the two are deliberately linked so technical hours can ladder into a USU degree. A good deal of college and career training is available without the drive to Salt Lake.
One practical note as you weigh neighborhoods: a fast-growing countywide district shuffles its boundaries as it builds, so the elementary or high school tied to a street can move. Pin down the current assignment with the district itself once a specific home is on your short list.
The details
Good to know
Because the district is countywide and still growing, individual school boundaries get redrawn as new schools open, so the assignment tied to an address today may not be permanent. Ask Tooele County School District directly for a given home, and read the parent reviews and scores on GreatSchools and Niche to judge the schools for yourself.
The everyday picture
- Tooele County School District is one countywide district and runs the public schools.
- Tooele High is the city's comprehensive high school, with around 1,900 students.
- USU Tooele and Tooele Technical College both keep campuses in the city.
- Check GreatSchools and Niche for ratings, and confirm boundaries with the district.
The library, pool, and golf course
Tooele City Library on Vine Pratt Aquatic Center Municipal golf
The civic and recreation core is compact and genuinely useful. The Tooele City Library sits at 128 W Vine St in the downtown grid, a working public library rather than a token branch. Its hours shift with the season, so it is worth checking the current schedule, but it anchors the everyday side of downtown.
For swimming, the Pratt Aquatic Center at 55 N 200 W is indoors and does more than lap lanes: an eight-lane competition pool with diving boards, a lazy current river, a water slide, and leisure and kiddie pools, so the season never shuts the water down. Golf is covered by Oquirrh Hills, the city's municipal 18-hole course. Both run through Tooele City Parks and Recreation.
The bigger outdoor pieces sit at the edge of town: Settlement Canyon and its reservoir climb straight out of the south end of Main, and Middle Canyon runs east toward the Oquirrh crest. Those are day-out destinations rather than everyday errands, and each has its own guide.
The details
Good to know
Library and pool hours change with the season and staffing, so check the current schedule before you plan around them. For the canyons and the reservoir at the edge of town, the Settlement Canyon and Middle Canyon guides cover the fees, seasons, and road conditions.
The everyday picture
- The Tooele City Library on Vine Street is a working downtown public library.
- The Pratt Aquatic Center is an indoor pool with an eight-lane pool, a lazy river, and a slide.
- Oquirrh Hills is the city's municipal 18-hole golf course.
- Settlement Canyon and Middle Canyon put real outdoor recreation at the edge of town.
The honest gaps
What is still over the hill Big-box variety Specialist care
Being honest about the gaps is the point of a page like this. Tooele covers a normal week, but it is not the Salt Lake Valley, and a handful of things still mean a drive east over the Oquirrh saddle. The widest big-box and warehouse selection beyond the three grocery anchors is over there. So is most specialist medicine beyond what Mountain West Medical Center and the two clinic systems handle.
Chain breadth is the other honest gap: the deep bench of restaurants, big retailers, and specialty stores that a metro carries. Tooele has real independents and the everyday chains, but the full selection is about thirty-five minutes away. For most residents that is a periodic trip, not a daily one, which is exactly the trade the valley offers.
The one thing this page deliberately leaves out is the commute itself. How long the drive to Salt Lake actually takes, which routes carry it, where the jobs are, and how winter affects the corridor are the relocation half of the decision, and they live on the moving guide.
The details
Good to know
The commute math, the employers, and winter driving are the relocation side of the decision and sit on the moving to Tooele guide, not here. This page stays with the functional week.
The everyday picture
- Big-box variety beyond the three grocery anchors means a trip east.
- Specialist medicine beyond the local hospital and clinics is over the hill.
- The widest chain and mall selection is about thirty-five minutes away.
- For a normal week, though, groceries, care, schools, and rec are all in town.
