Moving to Elk Ridge, Utah

Elk Ridge is a small hillside city at the south end of Utah Valley. It sits south of Salem and east of Payson, up the hill. About 4,970 people live here, by the 2025 Census estimate. The 2020 count was 4,687. Growth has leveled off, and the city was a little smaller in 2025 than in 2024. All of it is in Utah County, on about 2.9 square miles of land.

The Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest starts at the top of town, and Loafer Mountain rises to the southeast. Woodland Hills is the next city east, across Loafer Canyon. City Hall is at about 5,240 feet. Homes run from about 4,800 feet at the north entry to about 5,500 feet on the top streets. The city line climbs to about 6,400 feet on hillside that has no homes.

The mailing ZIP code is 84651, which is also Payson’s. A “Payson” address can be in Elk Ridge. The neighborhoods topic walks the city from the bottom of the hill to the top, and the real estate topic covers the homes.

The Goosenest and the name

The land was part of the 1,726-acre Goosenest Ranch. In 1968 a developer named James Winterton bought part of it from the James Fayette Shuler family. He platted it as Salem Hills, after the nearby town. In the fall of 1971, Utah County approved the plan. It asked that the area become a town if it ever passed 100 permanent residents. The first homes went up in the early 1970s.

Salem Hills became a town on December 22, 1976. About a year and a half later, a special election gave it a new name. Voters picked Elk Ridge, for the elk herds that wintered nearby. The town later became a city. The city’s plan counts 1,838 people in 2000 and 2,436 in 2010. The Local tells the ranch story in The Goosenest.

The General Plan and how big the city can get

The city’s General Plan is the October 2024 edition. It calls Elk Ridge “an exurban city,” meaning a town set out beyond the busy core of a metro area. Only a small part of the city is zoned for stores and offices. The same document is the city’s annexation plan, and it says very few areas are left to annex.

The plan puts a ceiling on growth. It sees room for 250 to 500 more homes, or about 1,000 to 1,500 more people. That would bring the city to around 6,500 to 7,500 people. It counts 212 building lots in approved subdivisions. From 2029 it expects growth closer to an average of 2.0% a year.

Elk Ridge has four real seasons. Summers are hot and dry. Winters are cold, with steady snow from November through March. Spring and fall are milder.

No weather station sits in the city. These numbers come from the NOAA station at the Spanish Fork Power House. NOAA is the national weather agency. The station is about 6 miles northeast of City Hall and about 500 feet lower. Elk Ridge runs cooler and gets more snow than the station. No station measures the hill, so I give no number for the difference.

The same station serves Spanish Fork and Mapleton, so the figures match their hubs.

These are the station’s normal highs and lows for each month. Summer nights cool off well. A normal July night drops to about 61°F at the station.

Rain and melted snow add up to about 20 inches a year at the station. April is the wettest month, with about 2.5 inches. July is the driest, with about 0.6.

Frost dates matter if you garden. At the station, the last spring freeze is usually around April 25. The first fall freeze comes around October 18. That leaves about 174 days between them. The hill likely has a shorter season. About 118 nights a year drop to 32°F or lower at the station.

Winter on the hill roads

Every way out of Elk Ridge is a road down the hill. The drive down can be icy. The city’s plan says neighborhoods need “multiple access points onto the city street system to provide alternatives during winter weather.” It adds that they help in an emergency evacuation. The NOAA station at the Spanish Fork Power House gets about 66 inches of snow in a normal year. That is more than Provo and Saratoga Springs get. Heber City, in the mountains, gets more. Elk Ridge sits higher than the station and gets more snow than it does. No station measures the hill, so there is no number for how much more.

At the station, January is the snowiest month, with about 17 inches. December brings about 16 and February about 14. November adds about 7 and March about 7. April brings about 4. October gets only a trace. No snow falls from May through September.

Summers are hot and dry. At the station, a normal July afternoon reaches about 93°F. Nights fall to about 61°F. June is milder, with highs near 86°F. August is close to July, near 91°F. Elk Ridge runs cooler than the station, so afternoons on the hill run below these numbers.

Hot days are common at the station. In a normal year, about 60 days reach 90°F or hotter. Provo, about 18 miles north, runs about two degrees hotter in July.

I have no wind number for Elk Ridge. No station on the hill records wind, and no official wind figure exists for the city. I make no claim that the hill is windier or calmer than the valley below.

Wind still matters for a home on an open hillside. A lot that faces open slope takes more weather than one tucked between homes. The same open slope matters for fire. The city asks for a cleared area around homes in its hillside zones, called defensible space. The home checks topic covers it.

Utah Valley gets inversions in winter. An inversion is when cold air gets trapped in a valley under a lid of warmer air. On calm winter days, haze builds in that trapped air. The county’s air ratings, listed below, cover Elk Ridge.

What the EPA says

Utah County is in the Southern Wasatch Front area for the 2015 ozone standard. Ozone is a gas that forms on hot, sunny days. EPA lists the area as Marginal, which means it does not meet that standard.

For fine particles, called PM2.5, EPA ruled that the Provo area meets the standard. That took effect on December 19, 2025. The area is now a maintenance area, with a plan to keep it that way.

No air monitor sits on the hill, so I make no claim about how Elk Ridge compares with the valley. The county posts the daily air quality index on its air quality page.

Here is what I would do. Check the air each day, the way you check the weather. If air matters to you, visit during a gray winter stretch and a hot summer afternoon before you buy. Housing is the biggest cost in Elk Ridge. The glance box at the top of this page shows the latest typical home value, from the U.S. Census. That number is the middle of what owners say their homes are worth. It is not a sale price, so judge any home against recent sales nearby.

There are no shops inside the city, so every errand is a drive. The shopping topic shows where the stores are and how far. The city bills water, sewer, storm drain and garbage on one bill. Power comes from a separate utility. Lawns here run on drinking water, billed at the same rates as house water, so ask about summer bills. The utilities topic has the city’s rates, one by one.

Three taxes matter most when you move here: sales tax, state income tax and property tax. A table comes first. Then comes a look at what sits on an Elk Ridge property tax bill.

What is on an Elk Ridge tax bill

One tax area covers the whole city. It lists five groups. They are Nebo School District, Elk Ridge City and the Central Utah Water Conservancy District. The other two are county service districts, one for behavioral health and one for animal shelter service. There is no separate fire or sewer line, because the city runs its own fire department.

The school district is the biggest piece. For 2025 the state lists it at about 0.72% of taxable value. Elk Ridge City is about 0.10%. For comparison, Salem is about 0.11% and Payson about 0.13%. Taxable value is the part of the value that gets taxed. I have not added the pieces into one total, because not every line was pulled.

Neither Elk Ridge nor Nebo School District is on the state’s 2026 list of tax hearings, from a news copy of that list. One small rise reaches every bill. The water district raised its levy slightly in 2026.

The primary home exemption

Utah gives a tax break to the home you live in. A primary home is taxed on 55% of its market value. Second homes and nightly rentals are taxed on all of it. Check your tax notice for the primary home line to see that the break is applied.

From January 1, 2027, state law makes an application for the break mandatory when ownership changes. Put that on your first-month list.

Car fees and the emissions test

Utah charges a yearly fee based on the age of your car. Utah County also requires an emissions test to register most cars. The first 90 days topic walks through the test and the steps to register.

The glance box at the top of this page shows the latest typical home value for Elk Ridge, from the U.S. Census. That number is the middle of what owners say their homes are worth, from Census surveys over five years. It is not a sale price. Prices shift through the year, so judge any home against recent sales of homes like it.

The Census counts about 1,360 homes in the city. About 92% are single-family houses on their own lots. About 8% are attached homes, such as the twin homes in Parkside Cove. The Census counts no apartments. Nearly all occupied homes, about 99%, are lived in by their owners. The 35 empty homes are all kept for seasonal or occasional use.

About one home in eight dates from the 1970s Salem Hills start. Most went up after 1990, and the 2010s were the busiest decade. More than half of the homes were built since 2010. Only a few homes come up for sale at a time, so be ready when the right one does.

Lots and floors

The county roll gives the median lot as about 0.36 acre. About six in ten detached homes sit on a quarter to a half acre. The median home has about 2,000 square feet above ground. Most are one story above ground, and most of those have basements. The county counts only the floors above ground, so a basement is extra.

What the zones allow

A zone is the city’s rule for what can be built on a lot. The city’s plan uses these groups.

Every residential zone allows an accessory apartment as a conditional use. That means the city must approve it first, and the permit renews each year for a $30 fee. The neighborhoods topic shows how the lots change from the bottom of the hill to the top.

Elk Ridge is one city, not a set of named villages. It reads best by area, from the bottom of the hill to the top. The areas below run from the north entry to the top streets. Homes sit from about 4,800 feet to about 5,500 feet. The names are the plat names on the county roll.

Areas come from the county assessor roll and the city’s General Plan. Elevations come from the U.S. Geological Survey and are rounded. Which school a home goes to depends on its exact address, so check with Nebo School District.

A few. New homes in Elk Ridge come one plat at a time, mostly at the north entry, plus a few lots between older homes. There is no builder’s community here, and no county or city record names a builder for the plats below.

Building has slowed a lot. The county roll counts 47 new homes in 2019 and 47 in 2021. It counts 34 in 2022, then 11 in 2023 and 12 in 2024. The city’s plan counts 53 building permits for new homes in 2020 to 2021 and 35 the next year. It counts 11 in 2022 to 2023 and 4 in 2023 to 2024 up to the date of the plan. The plan counts 212 building lots in approved subdivisions.

Few areas are left to add to the city. The 2024 plan marks future annexation land on the northwest edge, toward Salem and Payson. An annexation brings land into the city. It does not say what will be built.

Building on a lot

The city’s January 2026 fee schedule lists impact fees. These are one-time fees on a new home. Water is $5,653. Sewer is $7,193.40, a pass-through fee to Payson. Roads are $3,304 and parks $2,393. The power utility sets the electric fee. The city adds a $200 fire hazard evaluation fee and a $2,500 landscaping deposit. The city returns $2,400 of the deposit after an inspection. A retaining wall over 4 feet needs a permit.

Inside the city’s wildland-interface map, a new building needs a fire safety permit from the fire chief. The home checks topic has the rules.

1. Is the lot in a recorded plat? A recorded plat is a filed map of lots.
2. Which zone is it in? Half acre and third acre are different zones.
3. Is it inside the wildland map? Ask the city office. Inside it, new building needs a permit.
4. What is the slope? Ask for the geotechnical report on any hillside lot.
5. What does the city charge? Ask for the fee schedule and the water, sewer and power hookups.
6. Which school? Ask Nebo School District which schools serve the address.

Builders often cover the buyer agent fee, and your agent puts that in writing before you sign. Buying new works differently from buying a resale home, so read how it works before you tour.

Every town has its own list of things to check. None of these should scare you off. They are the questions I would ask about any home in Elk Ridge. A map or a test can answer each one for a single address, so check them one home at a time.

The 2018 fires

Two lightning fires burned in 2018. They were Bald Mountain, from August 24, and Pole Creek, from September 6. Elk Ridge and Woodland Hills were evacuated the evening of September 13. Residents came home the morning of September 22, nine days later. No homes were lost. Later that month, rain caused flooding and debris flows in Loafer Canyon. The state wildfire fee

Utah is rolling out a yearly fee on homes in the state’s high-risk wildland-interface area. It begins January 1, 2027. The county collects it, and the state forestry division sets it by the size of the structure. I give no dollar figure. Look up an address on the state’s wildfire risk map and get an insurance quote before you make an offer.

Water, deer and the open slope

Elk Ridge has no secondary water, which is a separate pipe for lawns. Lawns and gardens run on drinking water, and watering during mandatory limits draws fines. The utilities topic has the bill.

Deer browse gardens. The city counted about 375 deer in town in the summers of 2021 and 2022, against a target near 200. Feeding is not allowed.

The other state hazard maps have no mapping for Elk Ridge. They are not yet mapped by the state, so that is not the same as no hazard. Utah does not make agents check or share ground hazards, so the check is yours.

Last, drive the street in winter before you buy. The hill roads are part of the home. Ask me about any of these on a home you like, and I will tell you what the record shows. Your agent on the ground can set up the radon test and the inspection.

Few homes come up for sale in Elk Ridge, and the right one may not come along every week. Being ready matters when it does. Buyers here use the full range of loan programs, including conventional, FHA and VA.

USDA’s map shows Elk Ridge in its eligible area today. Check the address on USDA’s lookup, since the map and the income limits change. That is a map result only. It does not mean you qualify.

A home on a hillside lot or a brand new home can bring its own questions. A new home adds a timeline, so the build schedule and your loan timeline have to line up. Talk to a lender before you sign a build contract, not after.

Elk Ridge is a city of homes. The General Plan zones only a small part of the city for business. There is no business park. The employers named in town are the city itself and its volunteer fire department. The jobs sit down the hill in Payson and Spanish Fork, and up the valley in Provo, Orem and Lehi.

How people get to work

The average trip to work is about 26 minutes (Census, 2020 to 2024). About 68 workers in 100 drive alone, and about 7 in 100 carpool. About 22 in 100 work from home, which is about 1 in 5. The county share is 19. Under 1 in 100 ride transit. About 1 in 5 workers get to work in under 15 minutes, and about 1 in 7 spend 45 minutes or more.

Jobs in the next towns

Payson is about 10 minutes away and Spanish Fork about 14. Provo is about 25 minutes, Orem about 31 and Lehi about 38. Lehi sits in the tech area people call Silicon Slopes. Utah County as a whole had about 302,200 jobs in March 2026, and the average weekly wage was $1,288 (BLS). Salt Lake City is about 65 minutes away, so a daily trip there is long.

There is no hospital or clinic in Elk Ridge. Mountain View Hospital in Payson is the nearest. It is at 1000 East 100 North, about 4 miles and 9 minutes from City Hall. It is part of MountainStar, the HCA Healthcare group, and has 124 licensed beds. Its emergency room is open 24/7. The state lists it as a Level IV trauma center, and the Utah Department of Health has named it a stroke receiving facility.

For walk-in care, Revere Health Spanish Fork Urgent Care is at 972 North 600 East in Spanish Fork, and its site says walk-ins are welcome. Clinics, dental offices and primary care sit in Payson, Salem and Spanish Fork. The city fire department is a volunteer-based department, and the utilities topic has the details.

Nebo School District serves Elk Ridge. The district has about 41,700 students in 49 schools (October 1, 2025). Its main office is at 350 South Main Street in Spanish Fork, and the phone is 801-354-7400. In Nebo, elementary school is kindergarten to grade 5 and middle school is grades 6 and 7. Junior high is grades 8 and 9, and high school is grades 10 to 12.

No school sits inside the Elk Ridge city line. The schools are down the hill in Salem. Most homes go to one of two elementary schools. Mt. Loafer Elementary takes the north and west part of town, including the north entry. Foothills Elementary takes the south and east part. Both feed Valley View Middle, then Salem Junior High and Salem Hills High.

Salem Hills High opened in 2008 and is about 9 minutes from City Hall. A few homes at the far south edge of the city go to Payson schools instead. Boundaries change, so confirm the schools for an address with Nebo School District, and do not guess from a listing. To enroll, use the registration page on the district site or call the district.

One name to watch: a school called Elk Ridge Middle School exists in the Jordan School District in Salt Lake County. It is a different school and has nothing to do with this city or with Nebo.

I do not rate schools, and I would be wary of anyone who says which one is best. Check boundaries and programs yourself, with what matters to you in mind. The links below go to the district and to independent sites.

No college campus sits in Elk Ridge. Two large universities are about half an hour up I-15. Brigham Young University in Provo is about 19 miles away, and Utah Valley University in Orem is about 22 miles. Each is about 29 minutes from City Hall. A student can live here and drive to class.

Mountainland Technical College has a campus in Payson at 993 South 1950 West. It teaches career and technical programs. Check which programs that campus offers before you plan around it.

Elk Ridge sits up a hill, so every trip starts with a drive down. Two city roads lead off the hill. Elk Ridge Drive runs north into Salem. At 11200 South it becomes the Loafer Mountain Parkway, which runs about four miles to State Route 164 near I-15. Goosenest Drive runs northwest into east Payson. Woodland Hills Drive is a third way out, through the next town. No state route runs inside the city.

Loafer Mountain Parkway was a three-phase, $44 million county project. The first part was finished in 2023 and the second in 2024. The third part rebuilt Elk Ridge Drive from 11200 South to Sky Hawk Way and started in April 2025. The nearest I-15 exits are Exit 253 at 8000 South, where the parkway starts, Exit 250 at Payson Main Street, and Exit 248. The average trip to work is about 26 minutes. I have no rush hour times for each road. Test your own commute at the hours you would drive it before you buy.

Not much. No UTA stop sits inside Elk Ridge. The nearest stops are about 2.5 miles away on State Route 198 in Salem and Payson. Route 821 runs from South County to Provo Station. Route 822 is a limited weekday bus to BYU and UVU. Route 805 also stops at the South Payson park and ride at weekday rush hours. UTA On Demand, the app-based ride service, has no zone in south Utah County. Plan on a car.

Do not buy a home counting on a train line that is not built. Routes and times change, so check the schedule before you ride.

Elk Ridge has no airport. Provo Airport (PVU) is the close one for commercial flights, about 20 miles and 27 minutes away. Its website lists Allegiant, American and Breeze. Check which cities each airline flies to from Provo before you plan around it.

Salt Lake City International (SLC) is the full-service airport. It is about 69 miles and 76 minutes from City Hall.

Elk Ridge bills water, sewer, storm drain and garbage on one city bill. Power comes from a separate public power district, and gas is separate too. City Hall is at 80 East Park Drive, and the phone is 801-423-2300. It is open Monday to Thursday, 9 to 4, and Friday, 9 to 1.

The city account

Sign up with the city's utility application. You can pay online, by mail or at the City Office. A new account takes a $100 deposit, refundable after 12 months of good payment, plus a $10 fee. The city's water comes from its own wells. Sewage is treated through Payson.

Lawns run on drinking water

Elk Ridge has no secondary water system. Lawns and gardens run on drinking water, billed at the same rates, and the rate rises as use grows. Watering during mandatory restrictions draws fines. Summer bills are the ones to ask about.

The city's January 2026 fee schedule lists these monthly lines. I have not added them into a total, because use changes the water line.

Power and gas

SESD serves Elk Ridge and Woodland Hills exclusively. Its office is at 803 North 500 East in Payson. Start service online at least two business days ahead. The first bill carries a $250 deposit and a $20 new-account charge. Gas comes from Enbridge Gas Utah. The city's page still links an old Questar sign-in, so older paperwork may say Questar. It is the same gas company.

Garbage and cleanups

Republic Services hauls the garbage on the city's calendar. Carts go out by 7 a.m. The city holds chipper days in May and September. You can get a burn permit from the city online. If a pickup is missed, call 801-785-5935 and say Elk Ridge City.

Fire, police and the council

The Elk Ridge City Fire Department is a volunteer-based department. The Utah County Sheriff handles police work under a contract with the city, and dispatch is 801-798-5600. The City Council meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. For a water or sewer emergency after hours, call Public Works at 801-938-0440.

Xfinity cable reaches the whole city. Fiber depends on the street, and it comes from several companies. On the state broadband map, one spot near City Hall shows CenturyLink, Quantum Fiber and Xfinity fiber. The north entry shows UTOPIA, Salem City Fiber, CentraCom, SenaWave, Quantum Fiber and Xfinity fiber. The upper south streets show UTOPIA, Beehive Broadband and Xfinity fiber. The middle of town and the west end showed only cable and copper wire. Fixed wireless and satellite are reported everywhere.

3. Get your Utah driver licenseThe nearest driver license office is in Springville, at 2277 West 700 South, Suite 1. The fee to transfer an out-of-state license is $52 for ages 21 and up, and $39 for 20 and under.
4. Register your carUtah gives you 60 days after you make a permanent home here. The DMV office is at 150 East Center Street in Provo. Pass the emissions test first.
5. Get an emissions testUtah County requires one for most cars. See the box below.
6. Declare your homeTell the Utah County Assessor whether the home is your primary home. From January 1, 2027, the exemption application is required when a home changes owners.
7. Test for radonRadon is a gas that can build up in a house. In ZIP 84651, 31.1 percent of short-term tests were at or above the action level. Test the house.

The emissions test

Utah County is one of five Utah counties that require an emissions test. Salt Lake, Davis, Weber and Cache are the others. A new gas car is exempt for its first two years. A gas car six model years old or newer is tested every two years. An older gas car is tested every year. Even model years test in even years, and odd model years in odd years.

From October 1, 2026, state law exempts cars from model year 1995 or older. Most cars newer than that need a test to register. Diesel rules differ, so check the county page. Testing stations set their own prices, and they must post them. The Utah County Air Quality Bureau is at 3255 North Main Street in Spanish Fork, and the phone is 801-851-7600.

There is nothing to buy inside Elk Ridge. The city has no grocery store, convenience store or gas station. Every errand is a drive down the hill. Salem is the closest stop, about 8 or 9 minutes away. Payson is the grocery and chain town, 10 to 13 minutes away. Spanish Fork is the big-box run, about 16 to 17 minutes.

Salem and Payson

Salem has Tractor Supply, Ace Hardware and Dollar Tree on and near State Road 198, about 9 minutes away. Payson adds Walgreens downtown and a Dollar Tree. Payson's Main Street was rebuilt in 2024. Most of the stores sit near Main Street, or on 800 South and Turf Farm Road by I-15 exit 248.

Spanish Fork, Provo and Orem

Spanish Fork has Costco, Macey's, Target and Lowe's on 1000 North and Canyon Creek Parkway. Provo and Orem are the mall and Home Depot run, with Trader Joe's and Harmons, about 23 to 33 minutes away. The restaurants topic lists the places to eat.

Elk Ridge sits under the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, which starts at the top of town. There is no signed public trailhead in Elk Ridge itself. Hikers drive to the Nebo Loop, and the town's own trails are short paved paths in its parks. The list below shows the drive from City Hall to the places named in this topic.

City parks

Elk Ridge has six city park properties, with about 25 acres of park space in all. Shuler Park, also called Ingram Field, is the main one. It covers 6 acres beside City Hall. It has a paved walking trail, a playground, restrooms, a pavilion, a tennis area, a grass volleyball area and a basketball court. You reserve the pavilion through the city office. The park is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dogs must be on a leash, and alcohol is not allowed in city parks.

Elk Ridge Meadows Park, also called Wildflower Park, covers 6.7 acres at the north end of town. It has a lit paved trail and a disc golf course. Deer Creek Trail Park has a lit paved trail, picnic tables and a playground. Grizzly Way Park has grass and a paved trail that crosses 11200 South to the Meadows park. Sky Hawk Park covers 5.9 acres, with a paved trail and a large grass field. The city's plan adds parking, restrooms, courts and a pavilion there. Those are plans, not built features. Loafer Canyon Retreat is a 1-acre lot the city keeps for drainage work and possible trailhead parking.

A future park is also on paper. Goosenest Park is 8 acres of city land, and the city says it will keep seeking funding for it. Elk Ridge adopted a Trails, Parks, and Open Space Master Plan in 2026. Its first goal is a trail link from town to the mountains, including a trail to Forebay. The city plans these trails. They are not built yet. Youth sports run through Salem City. The city site lists no pool, rec center or library in town.

Loafer Mountain Trail

Loafer Mountain Trail #098 is the main hike near town. Its trailhead is a fenced gravel lot on the Nebo Loop, just north of Payson Lakes. From City Hall it is about 38 minutes, down through Payson and up Payson Canyon. The trail is 5.8 miles each way, so a full trip is about 11 to 12 miles round trip. The Forest Service says it gains almost 2,100 feet in the next 5 miles. The full climb to the top is about 3,000 feet. Hikers, horses, mountain bikes and off-highway vehicles share it.

The signed trail ends on Santaquin Peak. Loafer Mountain itself is two feet higher, at 10,687 feet to the peak's 10,685, and it has no trail. The Spanish Fork Ranger District keeps current trail news at (801) 798-3571. Its office is at 44 West 400 North in Spanish Fork.

The Nebo Loop and Payson Lakes

The Nebo Loop is a scenic road of about 37 miles that climbs from Payson to near 9,350 feet. Mount Nebo, at 11,928 feet, is the highest peak in the Wasatch Range. The road has no drinking water. The gates close with the first real snow, usually in late October, and open again as the snow melts. In winter the road is snowmobile and snowshoe country. Fall color comes early up there. Grotto Falls trailhead is about 8 miles up the road from Payson.

Payson Lakes are three small lakes called Big East, Box and McClelland, at about 7,900 feet. They are about 44 minutes from City Hall. The campground season runs May 11 to October 11. A paved path circles Big East Lake, and the day-use area has a small swim beach. In 2026 the state posted a harmful algae warning at Big East and McClelland lakes, so check the state's algae page before you swim. No powerboats are allowed. Dogs are not allowed on the beaches or in the water. A day-use fee applies.

Salem Pond

Salem Pond sits in Knoll Park in Salem, about 7 minutes away. The state runs it as a community fishery. You need a Utah fishing license, and the daily limit is two fish. Strawberry Reservoir is about an hour and a half away.

No national park is close. All five of the nearest big ones are a long day or an overnight trip from Elk Ridge. The times below run from City Hall to each park's main visitor center.

Canyonlands, at the Island in the Sky visitor center, is about 3 hours 40 minutes. Zion has more than one entrance. The time above is to the Zion Canyon visitor center, so use the drive tool for the entrance you plan to use. Plan any of these as a weekend trip, not a day trip.

Sundance is the closest ski area, about 45 minutes from City Hall. The Cottonwood canyon resorts are about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half away. Park City Mountain is about an hour and 16 minutes. Elk Ridge sits at the south end of Utah Valley, so most ski days start with a drive north.

The Cottonwood canyon resorts are reached through the Salt Lake Valley. The Utah Department of Transportation posts live road status and the traction law on its Cottonwood Canyons page. At home, the Nebo Loop becomes a snowmobile route in winter. Each resort posts its own opening dates every fall.

Elk Ridge has no golf course of its own. The nearest 18-hole course is Gladstan Golf Course in Payson, about 4 minutes from City Hall at the foot of the hill. Payson City owns and runs it. Its own site describes 18 holes of rolling fairways, bunkers, water and views. Gladstan hosted a golf tournament during Salem Days in 2026, so it is in regular use.

Elk Ridge Meadows Park has a disc golf course, which is the only golf in town. Each course posts its own rates, hours and tee times, so check before you go.

There are no restaurants in Elk Ridge, so every meal out is a short drive down the hill. Food sits in four clusters. Salem has a few places on State Road and Center Street, about 8 or 9 minutes away. Payson's rebuilt Main Street, Utah Avenue and 100 North hold most of the local places, about 10 minutes away. The chains sit by I-15 exit 248, on 800 South and Turf Farm Road in Payson, about 12 or 13 minutes away. Spanish Fork's 1000 North has more, about 16 to 18 minutes away.

Close to home

The Nebo Loop is the big scenic drive close to home. Fall color comes early up there. Payson Lakes and Salem Pond are the nearest water. The city calls itself a Dark Sky community, and its General Plan asks every neighborhood to protect the dark skies. DarkSky International, the group that keeps the world list of dark sky places, does not list Elk Ridge.

In Payson and Salem

The Peteetneet Museum and Cultural Arts Center is a 1901 schoolhouse at 10 North 600 East in Payson, about 9 minutes away. Its amphitheater hosts Golden Onion Days concerts. The Payson Utah Temple is a landmark about 13 minutes away. Salem Pond is about 7 minutes away.

Spanish Fork and Provo

Spanish Fork has a large Sports Park and the Krishna Temple grounds, which host the Festival of Colors each spring. Provo and Orem, about 25 to 31 minutes north, have the malls, BYU and UVU campus life, and more theaters.

The arts are thin in Elk Ridge itself. There is no theater, gallery or music venue in town. The arts sit in the towns around it, and they are run by cities and volunteers.

Spanish Fork also has a community theater. Provo and Orem add the larger university stages.

Elk Ridge holds one big event, the City Celebration and parade in June. The towns around it add something most months. Dates move each year, so the months below say "usually".

The City Celebration and parade is usually held on a Friday in mid-June. The 2026 parade ran on June 12, along Park Drive past Shuler Park. It is the town's own event. For more, call the city office at 801-423-2300.

Salem Days and Payson

Salem Days is the first full week of August. In 2026 it ran August 1 to 8, with a Grand Parade, fireworks at Knoll Park and a Cardboard Boat Regatta. Payson's Salmon Supper is the first Friday of August. It sold out in 2026. Golden Onion Days is on Labor Day weekend, and the first one was held in 1929.
