Moving to Hyde Park, Utah

Hyde Park is a small town in Cache Valley, on US-91. North Logan is to the south, and Smithfield is to the north. Logan is about 5 miles south. Farm ground spreads west toward the airport, and the Bear River Range rises to the east. Hyde Park Canyon opens out of those mountains right above town. The town covers about 5 square miles today. The 2020 Census counted 4.4, and the town has added ground since.

The land climbs as you go east. The middle of town sits at about 4,600 feet. The west side, by US-91, is about 4,450 feet. At the mouth of Hyde Park Canyon the ground passes 5,000 feet. The high ground has the views and the trail. It also has the fault zone, a creek flood strip and steeper lots, and the home checks topic explains what to look up.

William Hyde chose the site in April 1860. By July 1, sixteen families had settled near a spring. The town was named for him, and also for Hyde Park in London, England, where the Daines family came from. The first houses stood close together on Center Street, between today's First West and the spring at the west end of town.

Water came first. The Logan-Hyde Park Canal, now called the lower canal, was finished in the summer of 1861. The Logan-Richmond Canal, the middle canal, brought water by June 1866. A third canal served the uplands off the Logan Canyon mountainside. The Utah Northern railroad passed through town by the fall of 1873. Electric interurban cars first ran through on September 17, 1912. Hyde Park was incorporated as a town on January 16, 1892.

Farming shaped the town for a long time, and farm ground still sits at the edge. About 5,790 people live here, by the 2025 Census estimate (5,786). The 2020 count was 5,234, and the 2010 count was 3,833. The Census counted about 2,955 in 2000, so the town has nearly doubled since then. That is about 10% growth since 2020.

Hyde Park has four true seasons. Winters are cold and snowy. Summers are warm and dry, and the nights cool off. Spring is slow, and fall is clear and crisp.

The numbers below come from the weather station at Utah State University in Logan. It sits about 4 miles south-southeast of City Hall, on the same east side of the valley. It is about 200 feet higher than the middle of town. No station inside Hyde Park has modern averages, so this is the closest one with a long record. Logan, North Logan and Millville use the same station, so their numbers match.

Frost and the growing season

The last spring freeze usually comes around April 30. The first fall freeze usually comes around October 16. That leaves about 166 frost-free days at the station. About 136 nights a year drop to freezing or lower, and about 41 days never get above freezing. Only about 4 nights a year fall to zero or below.

A normal year brings about 19 inches of rain and melted snow. May is the wettest month, and July is the driest.

Hyde Park gets about 62 inches of snow in a normal year, by the Utah State station. NOAA marks that yearly total as provisional, so think of it as a close figure, not an exact one. That is more than Salt Lake City gets. The snow comes one storm at a time, with clear days in between.

December is the snowiest month, with about 16 inches. January brings about 13 inches, February about 12, and March about 8. About 41 inches of the yearly total falls from December through February. Snow can start in October and can fall as late as May. From June through September there is none.

Snow also depends on where you stand. A station on the flat west side of Cache Valley logs about 44 inches a year. The Utah State hill logs about 62. The flat west side of Hyde Park, by US-91, sits at about the height of those low stations. It likely gets a little less snow than the Utah State figure. The high ground toward the canyon is near or above the station's height and likely gets a little more. No number exists for Hyde Park itself.

Summers are warm and dry. A normal July afternoon reaches about 88°F. That is cooler than Ogden or Salt Lake City. A July night drops to about 60°F, so the house cools off by morning.

Hot days do happen. A normal year has about 32 days at 90°F or hotter. The record at the station is 103°F, set on July 14, 2002. Summer 2026 came close. The station read 102°F on July 13, 2026, tied for its second-highest reading ever.

Late summer can bring haze from wildfire smoke. The air quality topic below has the numbers.

Cache Valley is a calm valley. The wind at Logan-Cache Airport averages 4.4 miles an hour over the year. The number comes from about 168,000 hourly readings between 2006 and 2025. The airport sits about 2 miles southwest of Hyde Park, so its record is close to the west side of town.

Spring is the windiest season at 5.4 miles an hour. Summer averages 4.8, fall 3.8, and winter 3.5. April is the windiest month at 5.8, and January is the calmest at 3.0.

Strong gusts are rare. Gusts of 30 miles an hour or more show up in about 1 hour out of every 100. In spring it is a little more, about 1.6 hours in 100. Dead calm is common instead. In winter, the wind is under 1 mile an hour for more than 4 hours out of every 10.

An inversion is when cold air gets trapped in a valley under a lid of warmer air. Cache Valley is a bowl with mountains on every side. On calm winter days, cold air sinks to the bottom and stays there. Fine particles, which the state calls PM2.5, build up in that trapped air, and the valley turns gray. A storm usually clears it out.

No air monitor sits in Hyde Park. The state's valley monitor is at Birch Creek Elementary in Smithfield, next door to the north. The official readings come from there.

The record shows the air has improved. Here is the history, step by step.

1. 2009EPA said the Logan area did not meet the federal standard for fine particles. The area takes in parts of Cache County and part of Franklin County in Idaho.
2. 2015Monitors began to show the area meeting the standard, EPA said.
3. June 2021EPA approved a maintenance plan for the area. The change took effect June 18 on the Utah side. The Utah plan runs through 2035.
4. TodayCache County is still on EPA's list, as a maintenance area. Better is not the same as over.

Winter days with an air quality index above 50 fell from 43 to 22 to 21 in the last three winters. The index starts at 0, and above 50 is moderate. No winter day went above 100 in those three winters. Above 100 is unhealthy for sensitive groups. These counts are for Cache County as a whole.

Over all of 2025, Cache County had 241 good days and 124 moderate days. None were worse than moderate. Summer brings a few hazy days too, from wildfire smoke and from ozone.

Here is what I would do. Check the air each day on the state's air quality site, the way you check the weather. If winter air matters to you, visit during a gray stretch before you buy.

The state can call a no-burn day when the air is bad. On a mandatory day, you may not use a wood fireplace, wood stove, pellet stove, or coal stove. Gas and propane are fine, and so are homes that use wood as their registered main heat. The fine can be up to $150.

Hyde Park has its own rules for outdoor fires. Open burning is allowed from April 1 to May 31 and from September 15 to October 31, with a state permit. Recreational fires are not allowed on red or yellow air days.

Housing is the biggest cost in Hyde Park. The glance box at the top of this page shows the Census typical home value, and the housing market topic explains what that number means.

The other costs are easier to pin down. The city sends one bill for water, sewer, storm water and trash. The utilities topic lists who runs what, including power and gas. The city's utility rates are not posted online, so ask the city office for the current sheet before you budget.

Groceries mean a short drive. There is no grocery store in town, and the shopping topic shows where the nearest ones are. Logan holds the county offices and most of the big stores, about 10 minutes south. Next to the smaller towns farther north, you are close to the hospital and the university. Three taxes matter most when you move here: sales tax, state income tax, and property tax. Here is each one, with the rates in effect in October 2026.

The primary home exemption

Utah gives a tax break to the home you live in. A primary home is taxed on 55% of its market value, up to one acre of land. You must live in the home for at least 183 days in a row each year. Second homes and nightly rentals do not qualify, so they are taxed on the full value.

Valuation notices usually arrive in late July. Tax notices usually arrive around November. Questions about your own bill go to the Cache County Assessor.

The city and the school district raised their rates for 2026

Hyde Park held a Truth in Taxation hearing on August 26, 2026. That is the public meeting a city must hold before it raises the tax. No member of the public spoke. The council then passed the new rate by a vote of 4 to 0.

The city's notice says its property tax brings in about 9.7% more money. For the sample home in that notice, the city's share rises from about $330 to about $362 a year. That is about $32 more. The city's levy was 0.000995 in 2025 and is 0.001100 for 2026.

The city says the money goes to streets. It pays for one more public works worker and for more sidewalk and curb repair.

The Cache County School District raised its 2026 rate too. The district's proposal would add about $211 a year for the sample home in its notice. The final rate figure is not posted yet, so treat that number as a proposal. The district is the biggest part of a property tax bill in Cache County.

I do not print a total rate. The rates differ by tax area, and 2026 differs from 2025. Ask for the exact bill on any home you are weighing.

The glance box at the top of this page shows the latest typical home value for Hyde Park, from the U.S. Census. That number is what owners think their homes are worth, averaged over five years. It is not a sale price. Only a few homes sell here each month, so price a home against recent sales of homes like it nearby.

Hyde Park is almost all detached houses. About 93% of the homes are single-family houses, and a few are duplexes and small buildings. The Census counts no mobile homes. Owners hold about 91% of the occupied homes. The county records most homes as one floor.

The homes are newer than the old townsite suggests. The median home was built in 1998. About 47% of the homes date from 2000 or later, and the 2010s were the biggest decade, at about a quarter of the homes. An old core survives, though. About 11% of the homes date from 1939 or earlier, and they cluster near Center Street.

Lots

The median residential lot is about 0.39 acre. About 55% of lots run between a quarter and a half acre. About 21% are an acre or more. About 1% are under a tenth of an acre, and those are the first townhome-size lots, built in 2025. Lots here run bigger than in North Logan next door, where the median is 0.29 acre.

Water: ask before you ask about the price

The city supplies the drinking water. Yard water comes from canals and irrigation companies, usually on shares. A share is a right to a part of the canal's water. Several companies serve Hyde Park, including the Hyde Park Irrigation Company, the North Hyde Park Irrigation Company and the Hyde Park Water Pipeline Company. Which one serves a lot is a question about that one parcel. Ask the seller, and get the answer in writing, along with whether any shares come with the sale.

Zoning is changing in 2026

The city's 2024 zoning map has farm, residential, commercial, industrial, open space, public, mixed-use and mountain recreation zones. In July 2026 the council passed Ordinance 2026-11. It repealed the residential transition zone and closed the R-2 and mixed-use zones to new development, "pending upcoming code changes."

A new large-lot zone was proposed, with a 9,000 square foot minimum and no maximum. It drew mostly unfavorable comment on September 9, and the vote was put off. It was back on the October 14 agenda, and the result is not posted. A 180-day pause on new land-use applications was on that agenda too, and its result is not posted either.

The planning commission is also drafting three new zones for more homes per acre, plus a future land use map. Accessory apartments, which are small second homes on the same lot, fall under Ordinance 2026-18, passed on September 9, 2026. They can be long-term rentals only. They cannot be larger than the main home, and they need a recorded deed restriction.

So ask what a lot can be used for before you buy it.

Hyde Park has no named community pages here, so the easiest way to read the town is by place. This list runs from the old townsite out to the edges. The ground rises from about 4,450 feet by US-91 to over 5,000 feet at the mouth of Hyde Park Canyon. The lots, the water and the checks change as you climb, so the homes are not alike.

New building in Hyde Park has been steady. Assessor records show 89 homes went up in 2025. That is the most in the county's record for the town, which runs from 2010 to 2026. The count was 39 in 2023 and 43 in 2024, and 2019 had 87. Unlike North Logan, building here did not slow after 2023.

Most of it climbed the east side, north of Center Street. New streets are also filling in south of Center. Visionary Homes is the one builder confirmed selling in 2026. Its subdivision is Meadows at Hyde Park, on 600 South at 250 East. The homes are single-family houses. Visionary Homes also holds a development agreement for a second subdivision, Aspen Grove, which is in the city's review.

The city has hit the brakes on denser building. In July 2026 it closed the R-2 and mixed-use zones to new development while it rewrites the code. A mixed-use project called The Aria, near 210 South Wolf Pack Way, had its approval questioned. The city proposed to revoke it, and a hearing was set for September 23, 2026. The result is not posted.

The city is also growing on paper. In August 2026 it annexed 183 acres on the west side, tied to a cold-storage plant. It accepted a petition for about 60 acres in the northeast for study. Neither one means homes yet.

Two new schools mark the growth, Juniper Ridge Middle and Old Ephraim Elementary. The schools topic has the details. Builders often cover the buyer agent fee, and your agent puts that in writing before you sign.

What a build involves here

1. Zoning clearance. A letter from the planning office comes before a building permit.
2. Permits. The city takes permit applications online.
3. Earthquake design. The city lists seismic design category D1.
4. Driveways. The width is capped at 30 feet.
5. Fault study. A lot in the state study zone may need one. The before you buy topic explains.

Every town has its own list of things to check. Hyde Park's list leads with the fault and the canyon creek on the east side. None of these should scare you off. They are the questions I would ask about any home here, and most have a free map you can look up for a single address.

Many subdivisions also have recorded rules called CC&Rs. Read them before your deadline. Check the water and sewer setup on any lot at the edge of town.

The best thing you can do before you shop is get pre-approved. That means a lender checks your finances and tells you how much you can borrow. It shows what you can spend, and it makes your offer stronger when the right home comes up.

In Hyde Park, the kind of property drives the paperwork. A home on city water and sewer follows one path. A lot with canal shares follows another. A steep east-side lot, an acre parcel or a home in the creek flood strip can follow a third. An appraiser, who is a trained person that values the home for the lender, may ask for different records on each. With few sales close by, the appraisal matters more. This is about records and care, not about rates or payments.

USDA loans are for homes in rural areas. A map from USDA shows most Hyde Park addresses outside its ineligible area. City Hall, the west fields and the east foothills all pass. A strip of blocks on the south edge, near 600 South and Green Canyon High, falls inside it. Income limits and program rules still decide who qualifies, and the map changes. Check the exact address on the USDA site before you plan on a USDA loan.

Utah Housing Corporation offers loan programs for some buyers. Ask about current programs, since they change.

Most people who live in Hyde Park work somewhere else. The Census says about 75 out of every 100 workers have a job outside the town. About 16 out of 100 work from home. The traffic topic has the trip to work.

Inside town, the jobs are at the schools, the North Cache Valley InstaCare, the city, and the businesses along US-91. Camp Chef, a maker of outdoor cooking gear, has its offices at 201 North 700 West. The state jobs office says Utah State University and the Cache County School District are the county's two largest employers. Both are a short drive away.

About 30 out of 100 employed residents work in education, health care, or social help. About 17 work in manufacturing, about 16 in professional, management, or office support jobs, and about 11 in retail. The county jobless rate was 3.6% in August 2026, a preliminary number.

A planned cold-storage plant

In August 2026 the city council approved a development agreement, 3 to 1, with Schreiber Foods. The same night it annexed 183 acres on the west side. Annexed means the land joined the city. Schreiber plans a cold-storage distribution center there.

The company projects about 500,000 square feet of refrigerated storage in the first phase and about 75 to 85 jobs. These are company plans, not a finished building, and no opening date is set. The plan has trucks using 600 South to reach the highway.

Hyde Park has an urgent care on its main road, and the nearest emergency room is about 5 minutes away. North Cache Valley InstaCare is at 4088 North Highway 91, about 4 minutes from City Hall. It is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday.

Cache Valley Hospital is at 2380 North 400 East in North Logan. MountainStar runs it. It has an emergency room that is open at all hours, and it is a Level IV trauma center. Trauma levels run from I, the most complete, to V. The Logan VA Clinic is in the same building.

Logan Regional Hospital is about 8 minutes from City Hall. Intermountain Health runs it. It has 148 beds and an emergency room open at all hours, and it is a Level III trauma center.

Hyde Park is in the Cache County School District. The district's 2026 to 2027 boundary map sends all of town to Juniper Ridge Middle School and Green Canyon High School. Elementary schools are split by address.

Old Ephraim Elementary, at 333 East 300 North, serves most of town. A strip along the west edge goes to Summit Elementary in Smithfield. A small strip at the north end goes to Sunrise Elementary, also in Smithfield. Confirm the school for an address with the district before you make an offer.

Juniper Ridge Middle School opened in August 2026 at 250 West 200 South. It teaches grades 6 to 8. Sixth grade moved into the middle schools that year. Green Canyon High is at 2960 North Wolfpack Way in North Logan. It had 1,701 students on October 1, 2025.

Old Ephraim opened for 2026 to 2027 and began the year at host schools. The school set a tentative date of September 21, 2026 to move into its new building, pending an occupancy permit. Ask the school where classes meet today.

Cedar Ridge Elementary, at 65 North 200 West, is a dual language magnet. Dual language means students learn in two languages. The Chinese path runs from Cedar Ridge to Juniper Ridge to Green Canyon. The Portuguese path runs to North Cache Middle and then Sky View High. Magnet students provide their own rides to school. Thomas Edison Charter School has a North campus in North Logan, for kindergarten through eighth grade.

I do not rate schools, and I would be wary of anyone who says which one is best. Check boundaries and programs yourself, with what matters to you in mind. The links below go to the district and to independent sites.

Hyde Park is not a college town, but a large campus is close. Utah State University, the state's land-grant school, is in Logan, about 5 miles and 12 minutes from City Hall. The state chartered it in 1888. In fall 2025, about 29,800 students were enrolled across the whole system, and about 20,600 of them study on the Logan campus.

Bridgerland Technical College is the public technical college. Its main campus is at 1301 North 600 West in Logan. It had about 1,680 students in fall 2024. Utah State joined the Pac-12 on July 1, 2026, in all sports.

US-91, also called Highway 91 or North Main, runs along the west edge of town. It is the road to North Logan and Logan on the south and to Smithfield and Richmond on the north. The stores sit on it, at and north of Hyde Park Lane.

Inside town, Center Street runs east from the old townsite toward the foothills. 600 South, which is also 3100 North, is the south edge road out to the highway. 400 East is a main north and south street. The city plows these three first when it snows.

The Census numbers tell the commute story. The average trip to work takes about 16 minutes. About 71 out of every 100 Hyde Park workers drive alone, and about 10 carpool. Fewer than 1 in 100 ride transit. About 16 work from home. These are estimates for 2020 to 2024, and they carry a margin.

Roads being built

Wolf Pack Way runs north and south west of Main, past Juniper Ridge Middle. The city is extending it. Phase A, from 400 North to the InstaCare, was under construction in 2026. The city has also applied for county grants for later phases north to Smithfield, and for 700 East to the Smithfield line. That would be a second north and south route. The grants have not been awarded.

In July 2026, UDOT, Logan, North Logan, Hyde Park, and Smithfield were preparing a joint study of US-91. Cache Valley has no interstate and no commuter rail. To reach I-15, you drive over Sardine Canyon to Brigham City, about 38 minutes from City Hall.

The bus here is free. Connect Public Transit, which people also know by its old name, the Cache Valley Transit District, changed its name in August 2024. Every ride costs nothing. It has run that way since 1992.

Route 15 is named "USU, Smithfield, Richmond," and it lists Hyde Park among its stops. Connect routes run Monday to Saturday. There is no bus on Sunday. The route page does not show the stops in Hyde Park or how often a bus comes. Look at the current schedule before you plan around it.

There is no FrontRunner in Cache Valley. Salt Lake Express runs a shuttle van from Logan to Salt Lake City.

For most errands, plan on a car. A bus can still help if you want to reach campus without parking.

There are no airline flights in Cache Valley. Logan-Cache Airport (LGU) is southwest of town, about 3 to 4 miles and under 10 minutes from City Hall. It serves private planes only. Ogden-Hinckley Airport is about 55 miles away, about an hour. Check which airlines fly from there today before you count on it. A shuttle van can take you to Salt Lake City without a car. Salt Lake Express runs from Logan to the airport in about 2 hours 5 minutes. Times and fares change, so check the schedule before you book.

Hyde Park City bills for most home services on one bill: water, sewer, storm water, and trash. Power and gas come from other companies. Here is who to call.

New owners fill out the city's Utilities New Customer Form. The city office is open Monday to Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and closed on Friday. You can pay at the office, in the drop box, or online.

A new billing system

In September 2026 the city moved to a new online billing system called Xpress Bill Pay. There is no fee to pay by card, check, or bank bill pay. Old auto-pay did not carry over, so a new owner signs up fresh.

Sewer

The city runs the sewer. A new home's building permit carries a Logan wastewater impact fee form, which points to a tie into Logan's system.

Water for the yard

Yard water is separate. Many lots use canal and irrigation company shares. Which company serves a lot is a question for the deed, so get the shares in writing. The housing market topic names the companies.

Hyde Park can get cable and fiber internet. Google Fiber and Xfinity cable show at City Hall, on the west side, and in the east foothills on the state map. Quantum Fiber shows on the west side. Wireless and satellite fill in everywhere else. What you can get depends on the street, so check the exact address before you buy.

Hyde Park was the third Cache Valley city to sign with Google Fiber, after Logan and North Logan. If you work from home, check the exact address on the state map before you make an offer.

Moving day is only the start. Here is the short list for your first 90 days in Hyde Park, in the order most people do it.

1. Open the city accountGo to the city office with the Utilities New Customer Form, and sign up for Xpress Bill Pay. Call Rocky Mountain Power and Enbridge Gas for power and gas. Do this a week before you move in. The office is closed Friday.
2. Get your Utah driver licenseThe Driver License Division office is in Logan, at 110 East 700 South. A new resident with an out-of-state license needs an appointment. Bring proof of who you are, your Social Security number, proof of your Utah address, and your current license.
3. Register your carUtah gives you 60 days after you set up a permanent home. The Cache County motor vehicle office is in the courthouse at 179 North Main in Logan. A car that is new to Utah needs a quick VIN check.
4. Get an emissions testCache County requires one for older cars. See the box below.
5. Register to voteDo it online at vote.utah.gov once you have your Utah license or state ID.
6. Claim the primary home tax breakThe county may mail you a form. Send it back within 30 days. The taxes topic in chapter 2 has the full rule.
7. License your dogDog licenses are issued at the city office and renewed each January. A spayed or neutered dog costs $10, and any other dog costs $20. Bring proof of the rabies shot.
8. Learn the city rulesNo street parking from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., November 1 to April 1. That is city ordinance 11.40.050. Put trash cans out the morning of pickup and bring them in that evening. Clear the sidewalk by your property.
9. Know the burn rulesOpen burning needs a state permit. The seasons are April 1 to May 31 and September 15 to October 31. No recreational fires on red or yellow air days.

The emissions test

Cache County is one of five Utah counties that require an emissions test. The Bear River Health Department runs the program. A car is exempt when it is less than six years old. Older cars test every two years. Cars with an odd model year test in odd years, and cars with an even model year test in even years.

Electric cars are exempt, along with very old gas and diesel cars. You need the test certificate, or proof of an exemption, before you register or renew. Private stations do the tests and set their own prices.

Home businesses need a city business license. The forms are on the city site.

Rules and office hours change. Check each office before you go.

Hyde Park has no grocery store, pharmacy, hardware store, or big box store. The stores in town sit in one strip along US-91, on the west edge of town. The nearest full grocery is Lee's Marketplace in Smithfield, about 5 minutes north.

On US-91 you will find a Maverik on Hyde Park Lane, which is open 24 hours and sells fuel and propane. Freckle Farm, at 3915 North Highway 91, is a greenhouse and garden center. It is closed on Sunday. Cycles & Sleds sells powersports gear. Hooker Appliance, at 3620 North Main, sits at the south edge of town.

Lee's has a pharmacy, closed Sunday. Walmart and Anaya's Market, a Latin grocery, are in North Logan, about 5 to 7 minutes south. Target opened in Logan in July 2026. What Hyde Park does not have

A few big names are not in town, and the valley's old indoor mall closed in 2024. Here is the nearest one of each.

The outdoors begin at the east edge of town. Hyde Park Canyon opens out of the Bear River Range above the streets, about 9 minutes from City Hall to the mouth. Farther east, a large wilderness and the high lakes are an hour or less away.

The Bonneville Shoreline Trail

The Bonneville Shoreline Trail follows the old shoreline of Lake Bonneville along the foothills. In 2024 the city opened a 2.85-mile piece. It was paid for by a state outdoor recreation grant, the county's recreation tax, called RAPZ, and a willing landowner who let the trail cross. Close any gate you pass.

In 2024 the city said it was working with Trails Cache, North Logan, and Smithfield to keep the trail growing. The county is working to extend it north toward Smithfield.

The high country

The Mount Naomi Wilderness lies east of town. It covers about 44,500 acres of Forest Service land, with about 73 miles of trail. Naomi Peak is 9,980 feet. The summit trail is about 3.3 miles from Tony Grove Lake. Bikes and motors are not allowed inside a wilderness.

Logan Canyon starts about 13 minutes from City Hall. The Scenic Byway climbs past the Wind Caves and the Jardine Juniper on its way to Bear Lake. Check UDOT for road work in the canyon before a summer drive. Smithfield Canyon is next door to the north. See the Smithfield page.

City parks

Hyde Park runs its own parks and takes pavilion reservations online. A pavilion costs $25 for residents. There is no pool or recreation center in town.

Youth sports run through North Logan Recreation next door. The city is also writing its first Active Transportation and Parks Plan.

No national park is close to Hyde Park. Golden Spike National Historical Park, west of Brigham City, is the nearest park site. It marks the spot where the first railroad across the country was joined in 1869.

The nearest of Utah's five national parks is Capitol Reef, about 5 hours 15 minutes away. The other four are farther. Plan any park trip as a long day or an overnight.

Closer to home, the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest starts at the east edge of town. The Mount Naomi Wilderness sits inside it. The outdoor recreation topic covers the canyon and the trails.

The Capitol Reef time comes from the site drive table. It is a map estimate from City Hall to the park, with no snow or road work. Check each park's own page and road alerts before you go.

Hyde Park has no ski area of its own. Cherry Peak, near Richmond, is the closest at about 23 minutes. Beaver Mountain is up Logan Canyon, about 49 minutes away. Powder Mountain and Snowbasin are over the mountains toward Ogden, about 1 hour 25 minutes.

Opening days are not posted yet for Cherry Peak or Beaver Mountain. Ski areas here usually open in late November or December, when the snow allows.

Hardware Ranch

Hardware Ranch is a state wildlife area up Blacksmith Fork Canyon, under an hour from town. In winter, elk gather there, and you can ride out to them on a sleigh or wagon. Rides usually run from early December to mid February, Fridays to Sundays. The state has not posted 2026-27 dates, so check its page.

No golf course sits inside Hyde Park. The nearest public course is Birch Creek Golf Club in Smithfield. The city-owned course and a private club are in Logan. A disc golf course is at Elk Ridge Park in North Logan.

Hyde Park has no sit-down restaurant. The only hot food in town is the grill at the 24-hour Maverik on Hyde Park Lane, which also sells pizza and Cinnabon rolls. For a dinner out, plan a short drive to Smithfield, North Logan, or Logan.

Hyde Park keeps its fun small and seasonal. The best-known stop is a farm in the foothills. For indoor fun, a university, and a zoo, you drive to North Logan or Logan.

Mt. Naomi Farms

Mt. Naomi Farms is a u-pick farm in the Hyde Park foothills. Its site says the 2026 picking season was open Monday to Wednesday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. It was closed Thursday to Sunday, and it took cash and Venmo only. Crops included berries, grapes, and pumpkins. Check the farm's site for the season before you drive up.

The farm also makes wine, in a winery finished in 2025, and hosts weddings. Its site gives no street address, so follow its directions.

Short drives south

Logan is about 10 minutes south. Zootah, a seven acre zoo, holds Zoo Lights in December. Utah State plays in the Pac-12 from July 2026. The American West Heritage Center in Wellsville has Baby Animal Days in April and a corn maze in the fall.

The arts scene in Hyde Park is thin. The farm's season and the town's own fall events are the local color. The stages, museums and galleries are in Logan, about 10 minutes south, and most of what the valley offers is there.

Hometown Days is the town's own celebration, and it is the one to know. It is usually held the third weekend of July, on a Friday and Saturday, and it centers on Church Square. In the fall, the city runs a few smaller events of its own.

Hometown Days

The weekend starts on Friday evening with food trucks, a car show, and the Kids Box Car contest. On Saturday there is a fun run and 5K, the Velvet Highway Parade at 10 a.m. in 2025, games, bingo, and the Old Timer's Social. A bike race runs at Lower Lions Park. An evening program ends with fireworks after dark. In 2026 the weekend was July 17 and 18.

The Hyde Porker barbecue contest runs on the Hometown Days weekend. It was on Friday in 2025 and on Saturday, July 18, in 2026.

In the fall

Each October, the city youth council runs Spook Alley and a gentler event called Little Boo at the City Office. New in 2026, the city planned an Arts & Ag pop-up, with a Halloween goat parade at Legacy Park. A Hometown Christmas Festival comes in late fall.
